About The Purple Pig Restaurant
The Purple Pig Restaurant is a Mediterranean restaurant on the upper level of 444 N Michigan Ave in Chicago, drawing on the flavors of Italy, Greece, and Spain. An open kitchen anchors the space, and the format doubles as a wine bar, reinforcing its identity as a pork and wine specialist. The Crispy Pig's Ear stands out among the menu's popular items, while the Roasted Bone Marrow with Herbs and the Spanish Octopus reflect the kitchen's range across European traditions. Reservations are advised, especially for seats where the open kitchen is in view.

Customer Review Summary
The Purple Pig draws consistent praise for its shareable Mediterranean small plates, with the Roasted Bone Marrow and Spanish Octopus singled out repeatedly as standouts. Diners describe the bone marrow as rich and perfectly paired with toasted bread, while the octopus earns marks for being tender and well-charred. Other frequently highlighted dishes include the whipped feta, beef tartare, and the milk-braised pork shoulder, which several call fork-tender and deeply flavorful. Service is often described as attentive and personable, with guests noting staff who guide them through the menu without hovering. The atmosphere is lively and energetic, though a few find the noise level high. A recurring caveat centers on portion and value: some reviewers feel certain dishes, such as the smoked pork chop, fall short of expectations for the price, arriving overcooked or underseasoned relative to the cost. One diner notes the pork chop came out medium-plus instead of the requested medium-rare, and found the accompanying sauce merely fine rather than memorable.

“Food is quite excellent here. Beef tartare was well flavored, nice presentation, just the right amount of toast to go with it. The pork ribeye was juicy and tender. Dessert was quite decent. Service is friendly and attentive. Atmosphere wise is quite noisy like a sports bar more than a restaurant.”

“I managed to get a reservation. Every dish was amazing! We especially loved the bone marrow, and the bread that came with it was so good — my kids absolutely loved it. If you like spicy food, you’d probably love the Spanish octopus dish too.”

“Wow this is one of the best restaurants we ever been. If you are in Chicago Downtown you must have dinner at the Purple Pig. …”

“Over-hyped, over-priced, over-sauced. It's quality ingredients, but presents as an elevated experience. It's not, unfortunately. Advertises as small plates, but oversized for a true tasting experience. Dish composition is too complex without adding anything, and in some cases detracting (e.g., imberico ham with too much sauce and covering it; see photo). Roast duck was huge, and tasty, but oversized for a meat portion without any balance for freshness or texture. Service is efficient and friendly. Decor feels like Olive Garden equivalent. Is an energetic vibe.”
