About Acanto
Acanto is an Italian restaurant and pasta shop at 18 S Michigan Ave in Chicago, serving salumi, pizza, pasta, and other Italian fare alongside cocktails and a large wine list. The menu spans 86 items, with mains ranging from simple starters to higher-priced plates, and the relaxed setting suits both sit-down meals and drinks. Bruschetta appears as a popular main, anchoring the starters, while the pasta-shop focus supports the broader Italian menu. A popular cocktail option rounds out the drink side, complementing the wine list. Reservations are advised during busier evenings, and the bar area offers a place to wait or dine more casually.

Customer Review Summary
Diners consistently praise the cozy, romantic atmosphere, with many highlighting the warm, dim lighting and plentiful candles that set the mood. The rigatoni is a standout dish, described as flavorful and hearty, while the ricotta gnocchi and bruschetta also earn specific praise. Happy hour is a frequent draw, with reviewers noting the Aperol spritz and panino prosciutto as highlights. Service receives mixed feedback: while many describe staff as welcoming and kind, a recurring complaint involves slow or inattentive service, with one diner waiting 30 minutes to place an order and another receiving the bill an hour before closing. Food quality also draws some criticism, with reviewers finding the chicken piccata overly salty and the rigatoni undercooked and lacking flavor.

“Acanto was a fantastic choice! Our waiter, Andrew, had great style and a cool attitude to match, making our visit truly worthwhile. He recommended the focaccia bread and seeded crackers, which were excellent served with olive oil. For our meal, we enjoyed the Calamari appetizer and the Rigatoni, though the Lobster Cappelletti wasn't quite for us. Despite that, we are still giving 5 stars because the service was excellent. We initially planned to dine at The Gage next door but pivoted to their sister location, Acanto, due to seating logistics. We can’t wait to return to try the fish and chips at The Gage! The Gage menu is also shared on this review.”

“Stopped in for a late lunch and was excited to find happy hour from 2-5 which included a decent variety of food and drinks. I had an aperol spritz, along with the panino prosciutto which was amazing. It came with a side salad - I’d …”

“The place seems very nice inside . The people working there they do their job .. Our service was top notch, great , 10 out of 10 .As far as food we had high expectations considering the prices . We started off with happy hour arancini and polenta fries and I feel like this was the best part of the dinner we had . The main entree , chicken piccata and rigatoni bolognese- NOT good . Rigatoni were undercooked and lacked flavor . Not worth for the 30 bucks . Chicken piccata was probably the worst I had . Salty boiled chicken sitting on top of some broccolini. Skipped dessert. Due to the great service , I may consider coming back and giving it another try . Thank you for the hospitality.”

“The restaurant has a very cozy atmosphere. The warm, dim lighting and the candle on the table made the evening romantic. The host quickly gave me a table. I'm not sure the food at this restaurant was anything unique for me. The prices are above average, and the food quality is quite ordinary. We found the pasta too peppery, but they remade it very quickly and without any problems. The waiter was very polite and friendly. However, after they brought us dessert, they immediately presented us with the bill, which I hadn't asked for. There was still a whole hour left before the restaurant closed. I interpreted this gesture as a request to leave as soon as possible.”

“Acanto and The Gage are neighbors. Acanto features a more exclusive Italian vibe and culture. We sat at the bar and had very tasty cocktails. We visited around 6pm on a Tuesday. There was no wait. Bartender and staff were very friendly and welcoming.”
