Customer Review Summary

Sushi Gen draws diners primarily for the exceptional freshness and quality of its fish, with the sashimi lunch and premium cuts like bluefin tuna toro and fatty tuna singled out as standouts. Reviewers consistently praise the authentic flavors, the careful handcrafting of each piece at the bar, and the warm, welcoming service from experienced staff who have worked there for years. Close behind, the omakase experience earns repeated mentions, with several noting the sushi masters keep serving treats until guests say stop, and the option to choose a fried head or miso soup with the amaebi. The recurring trade-off is the wait, with diners reporting lines of 30 to 90 minutes, especially at peak lunch and dinner hours, and a few noting the added cost of paid parking before the wait even begins. Several suggest arriving right at opening to secure a table, and most agree the freshness and craftsmanship make the wait worthwhile.

We always enjoy dining at Sushi Gen. It has become one of our long-time favorite spots, and we keep coming back year after year. We usually sit at the bar and order our sushi directly, where everything is incredibly fresh and carefully prepared in front of you. It’s always a popular dining choice, and even when it’s busy, the experience still feels smooth and well taken care of. The seating area is a bit small and intimate, but that actually adds to its charm. The vibe is warm, welcoming, and cozy, and there’s a comforting energy the moment you step in. Despite how popular it is, it never feels rushed or impersonal. Many of the staff have been working here for years, and you can really feel their experience and consistency in the way they serve and interact with guests. The sushi master is often present at the bar, personally greeting customers with a calm and friendly presence, which makes the whole experience feel even more special and genuine. We truly appreciate the attention to detail, the freshness of the fish, and the overall consistency over so many years. It’s rare to find a place that maintains this level of quality and atmosphere for such a long time. While the bar seating is a bit on the pricier side, it is absolutely worth it for the freshness, craftsmanship, and overall dining experience.

My favorite place for sushi in LA. The quality is amazing—this is one of the only places where the tuna actually tastes fresh and truly delicious. I’ve been to countless sushi spots all over California, and nothing beats this place. A lot …

Truly one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten. I never really understood how sushi rice should be seasoned and the quality of the fish is outstanding. Splurge for the premium chirashi with bbq eel.

This sushi place is the best in town. Raw tuna has an absolutely superb taste. It’s of great quality and has a high turnover rate, ensuring that you can always enjoy fresh sushi. However, one unfortunate aspect is that we don’t take reservations, which means we have to wait for at least 20 minutes.
