About Pickled @ Riccall
Pickled @ Riccall works as a village café in Riccall, just outside York, building its menu around pitta gyros and a honey halloumi pitta at its Main Street address. A deli side runs alongside the kitchen, with pork pies and scotch eggs sold over the counter, and food can be eaten in or taken away for eating elsewhere. Breakfast is part of the day too. Outside tables put seating in the open air, and dogs are welcome, which suits cyclists riding out from York and stopping here. For larger groups, the café puts on themed evenings and three-course meals, and a Christmas dinner is served in season. Booking ahead is recommended. The kitchen opens Monday to Saturday and stays closed on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
The Christmas dinner draws the warmest praise, with reviewers singling out succulent roast beef and trimmings and a sticky toffee pudding served warm with vanilla ice cream, described as light-sponged and generously portioned. Close behind is the breakfast and lunch trade, popular with cyclists riding out from York: a bacon, brie and cranberry sandwich, eggs with brown sauce on tap, and a honey halloumi pitta with chilli jam all get named, alongside deli buys like pork pies and a chilli scotch egg. One reviewer suggests the kinder brownie from the sweet counter, and a Spanish tapas night and a three course group meal both drew enthusiasm. Two accounts run counter to this. One describes a gyros lunch arriving cold with dry, overcooked chicken and a disputed takeaway surcharge left unexplained, and also notes cutlery that was not clean. Another, a regular of two years, reports standards slipping since a change of hands, citing reheated plates and bacon both under and overcooked.

“What a disappointing experience. We cycled around 20 miles specifically to stop here for lunch and ordered two gyros lunch "specials" with two soft drinks. The total came to £30.70, which didn't even seem to match the prices displayed on the menu board. When my friend queried the bill, we were told it was more expensive because it was "takeaway" – despite the fact we were eating at one of the outside tables and weren't given any takeaway packaging. It was a very bizarre explanation. To top it off, we were never given a receipt or even asked whether we wanted one. As for the food, apart from the fries (which were still warm but incredibly salty), everything else was cold. The pitta looked like it had come straight out of the packet, the chicken consisted of two very dry, overcooked slices smothered in mayonnaise, and the whole meal tasted as though it had been pre-cooked and simply reheated. It certainly wasn't what you'd expect from a freshly prepared gyros. To be completely honest, a 5-year-old could put together a better meal. To make matters worse, the cutlery wasn't clean or polished, which didn't exactly inspire confidence. The service itself was polite enough, but when we raised concerns about the pricing, the explanation made very little sense and no real effort was made to resolve the situation or reassure us. The staff could have handled the whole situation much better, and a little more professionalism and customer care would have gone a long way. We left with a very sour taste in our mouths after making a 20-mile cycle specifically to eat here. Sadly, we won't be returning and couldn't recommend this place to anyone, whether you're cycling through the area or simply looking for somewhere decent to eat. For over £30, we expected so much better.”

“Always excellent. Live locally and don’t visit as much as we should. Breakfast is of great quality and reasonably priced. Take away food is great - particularly enjoyed the chill scotch egg! We also attended the Spanish tapas night earlier this month which was a super night of authentic tapas. Hope there are more themed nights planned for the future.”

“100% recommend!! The food is delicious, i ordered the honey hallumi pitta bread and the seasoning was perfect!! Generous amount of chilli jam☺️. The service was great and the food arrived very quick! There’s a large selection of sweet treats (i advise you to try the kinder brownie as it was my favourite!)”

“Had a super night this week at the Pickled. A beautiful three course meal, everything cooked to perfection, with such great service and friendly staff. There were 30 of us, but we had plenty of room and it was buzzing. I am looking forward to more meals here... fantastic!!”

“Unfortunately, after being a customer here for 2 years, we probably won't return. It has recently changed hands and standards have definitely slipped. The new owners need to go on a course in customer service, and remember that a smile and a friendly attitude cost nothing. The food is definitely not as good as it used to be. Yes, the wait time was quicker but I'd rather wait a little longer and have my food freshly cooked. Some items on the plate were obviously warmed up and it was very inconsistent. The poached egg was good to be fair. The bacon I had: one piece was undercooked whilst the other was overcooked and most items were barely warm. Also, I'd prefer the option of buttering toast myself - or not. Personally I prefer it unbuttered but sadly didn't get the choice. Some of the more friendly upbeat staff seem to have left and the whole place now just seems a bit blah. Come on guys: If you're going to make a success of this place then get your butts into gear and make more of an effort. Greet diners with a smile and a welcome. Don't stand there looking like you'd rather be anywhere but! (I think it was the new female owner who served us). And to the chef: Cook from scratch for taste and consistency. And if you're serving the food yourself don't just plonk it down! A smile and "enjoy" just makes the whole experience better for the customer who, remember, is paying good money. Oh, and there will never be a place for cress (?) on a full English.”
