About The Grange Coffee Shop and Garden Centre
On School Lane in York, The Grange Coffee Shop and Garden Centre is a cafe attached to a garden centre, open Wednesday to Sunday during the day and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Orders are taken at the table by a waitress rather than at a counter, and the menu runs to jacket potatoes and a meal deal pairing a sandwich with salad or crisps, cake, and a hot drink. Cakes come in generous portions, often boxed up to take home. The entrance is step-free and wheelchair accessible, and seating outside suits customers eating in the open air. Dogs are welcome, and the team is known to give visiting dogs a sausage. High chairs are on hand for families with young children. Walk-ins are taken rather than bookings, and on-street parking serves those arriving by car.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the meal deal of a sandwich, cake and hot drink, praising generous, fresh portions and prices they call reasonable and good value. Jacket potatoes are described as very filling, and sandwiches, beans on toast and a giant piece of cake also get mentions. Staff are repeatedly called lovely, polite and friendly, and a few note that lots of cyclists use the cafe and that it is dog friendly. The complaints concern reliability. One reviewer arriving just before noon was told various lunch options were unavailable, and a later group was told there was no food after one of three staff members went home. That reviewer also found the coffee unappealing and the cafe little more than a Portakabin, with no plants on sale. Another reports pots of tea arriving very late and lukewarm, calling the service terrible. Two groups were too full to finish their cake and took it home, and one reviewer says staff gave their dog a sausage.

“Nice cafe - it's no frills, but does what you need an expect. The team there are nice and efficient. Garden centre was well stocked when we came for what we needed.”

“Service terrible, pots of tea arrived after 50 minutes and was luke warm. Lunch o.k. nothing spectacular.”

“Absolutely love this place. The prices are amazing considering its outskirts of York (don’t up them after seeing this) and whether it’s beans on toast or a giant piece of cake it’s always a pleasure. The ladies working there are always polite, helpful and courteous. I’m a cyclist and the facilities are top notch”

“Disappointed by what Google maps listed as a 'top rated' garden centre. Parking is on-street. There were no plants and the coffee shop is little more than a Portakabin, though it was clean enough. The cakes were all very tempting, but sadly the lunchtime menu was very limited. We arrived just before 12 and were told that various options were unavailable. The group that arrived after us were told there was no food, because one of the 3 staff members had gone home. Coffee was also a let down, very unappealing. Unlikely to return.
