About Number Twelve
Number Twelve runs as a licensed café on Castlegate in York, with local beer on tap so daytime visitors can order a pint alongside their coffee. You order and pay at the counter and collect your drinks, and food is brought out to the table, with no bookings taken. Three menus operate here: a main menu, a separate lunch menu and a specials board, with most of the main list available after noon. The Yorkshire breakfast comes with sausage, bacon, black pudding, hash brown, beans, mushrooms and tomato, steak pie is a recurring specials board order with chips, peas and gravy, and scones with cream sit among the cakes and tray bakes. A garden gives room for outdoor dining, and dogs are welcome out there, where a water bowl is put out for them. High chairs suit families with young children, while a step-free entrance serves visitors with mobility needs. Opening is daytime only, and the café closes on Thursdays.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the cooked breakfast and hearty lunch plates, with a Yorkshire breakfast of sausage, bacon, black pudding hash brown, beans and mushrooms singled out alongside a Yorkshire platter, a club sandwich and a ploughman's lunch. Close behind are the cakes and bakes, including a handmade salted caramel and ginger cake with real chunks of ginger, plus scones with cream and Earl Grey. Coffee and a local beer on tap also get mentions. Many describe the service as friendly, though one calls it sometimes frantic. Dog friendliness comes up repeatedly, and several enjoy the garden tables with a view of Helmsley Castle, where a full garden is read as a good sign. The main complaint comes from one diner who found the steak pie underwhelming, describing a small bought-in pie that was mostly crust, frozen chips, poor gravy and no check back. Others praise the specials board for steak pie and scampi, and the lunch menu, which one reviewer says is available after noon.

“super cafe and restaurant with indoor and outdoor tables. Good range of food and coffees/ drinks. we spent a good hour sitting in the sun on a lovely Bank Holiday Monday drinking coffee and watching the world go by.”

“Excellent food and service. Certainly enough on your plate to fill you up. You go to the counter to order and they bring your food to you at the table. Most of what is on the main menu is available after 12 noon and they also have separate lunch menu and specials board.”

“Decent looking large licensed cafe. You order and pay for your food at the counter and collect your drinks. When your food is ready they bring it to your table. I was a little underwhelmed with my steak pie, chips, peas and gravy, so much so that I didn't take a photo. Small bought in pie mostly crust with a little steak, frozen chips and peas, gravy poor. We were starving so it filled a hole and we left, no check back.”

“Stellar, and rather posh, ploughmans lunch with delectable looking desserts and tray bakes on offer. Excellent lunch menu with great variety on offer. Local beer on tap and friendly, sometimes frantic, service - though worth the wait!”
