Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the staff, describing a friendly, welcoming team that handled two family wakes with a private dining room and lounge, a buffet with a choice of two menus, and leftovers packed up to take home. Close behind is the large beer garden with trees, grass and board games, though one reviewer calls the outside seating dirty. Food earns praise for sausage and mash with thick gravy, a Philly steak baguette, and tender roast beef with good roast potatoes. The kitchen also draws complaints. One reviewer reports a raw chicken parm, a Kiev with next to no garlic filling and limp onion rings, and others cite undercooked root vegetables, a small Tower Burger and unavailable items such as small plates and Sunday roasts. Beer is another sore point: one table returned a cloudy pint of Landlord, found a second cask beer just as bad and was offered no refund, and another notes there are no hand pulled cask ales. After the raw chicken, the manager offered a free meal.

“The beer is very badly kept in this pub. We sent a pint of Taylor’s Landlord back as cloudy, paid for a pint of an alternative cask beer which was just as bad. No refund was offered, so £22 for four pints of poor beer. Dirty outside seating area.We will never return.”

“Hoped that food would be good because the pub is in a nice, tree-lined location. My partner tried to order from 3 small plates menu, but 2 of 3 items she wanted not available. A pub with no mushrooms? She ended up ordering indifferent chips covered in some kind of sauce - who knows what. I got a so-called Tower Burger, that was more of a bungalow burger. I suggested 3 out of five rating to be generous, my partner was thinking 3 out of ten. Please get your act together and recreate a decent pub from this poor offering.”

“Had a great meal, staff were great. Fabulous outdoor seating area with trees and grass area. Board games. I wish I had more time to hang out here”

“Came in tonight to try the food since the pub has recently come into new ownership. The food was awful. We got two meals and some onion rings. First was the Kiev which boasted a remarkably plain taste with next to no garlic filling. Then came the onion rings which were limp and depressing but the star of the show was my raw chicken parm. Despite being charred on the edges, mysteriously, the meat was untouched from the incinerator it must have come from. Front of house team were great and responded to this problem well, they seem like a lovely team and cannot fault them at all. Would definitely come back for a drink but won’t be there for food again despite the manager’s generous offer of a free meal later down the line. I don’t like leaving bad reviews but coming from someone who also works in the hospitality industry this sort of dangerous negligence should be flagged so that something will be done about it. Perhaps the chef is in training and I hope this will scare them straight from ignoring basic food safety. If this is not the case then maybe you should find a new chef or any chef for that matter. Leaving a one star review so this gets noticed by management to follow up on with the kitchen team. In reality, FoH were great this review does not represent you guys !”

“I would personally like to thank the staff at the walnut tree, for making my mums wake complete. We arrived earlier than planned and was asked if we wanted the food bringing out earlier. When the food was taken out it was placed on a large table. We had a chose of two menus to choose from. The service at the bar was great, with a wide selection of drinks to chose from. They dont do cocktails. But staff did say they would make cocktails if we wanted them. The only downside was the card machine at the till stopped working. I think that was my mum saying stop now. Remaining food was packaged up so we could take it home. I would definately recommode the walnut tree. Mum would of been proud. WELL DONE TO ALL STAFF.”
