Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the Sunday roast and trio mains, with excellent roast beef, nice pork belly and moist turkey singled out, alongside fish and chips, pies with rich gravy and a slow-cooked shank that was tender enough to melt into the mash. Desserts follow close behind, including apple crumble, chocolate brownie and tarte tatin, and a trio of desserts. Several describe the staff as friendly and attentive, with one server careful with food allergies, and one reviewer says a dog was welcomed. A few note the pub fills up, and one suggests booking in advance. The criticism centres on value: one reviewer found two Sunday lunches lukewarm, with overcooked pigs in blankets and bland cauliflower cheese, while another found the crackling chewy and the portions small for the price, so they ordered dessert. By contrast, another describes large servings. One walk-in party says they were served like the only guests even with a full house and a pressured kitchen.

“What a lovely place to have dinner in York without the hassle of finding parking and navigating the throngs of tourists mocking York during the summer season! Cannot say l enough good things about the atmosphere, the food, and George’s service! She made us feel at home and took good care of us - and, very careful with food allergies! We loved this place! When back in York, we are coming back for sure! Thank you!”

“We visit the Fox and Roman every time we’re in York, and it never disappoints. My grandparents come every week and are always so well looked after by George and Alicia, who provide such warm, attentive service and genuinely care about their customers. The food is consistently excellent, with great quality and plenty of choice, and the service is always friendly and professional. The setting is beautiful, with a lovely atmosphere, and everything is kept spotlessly clean and welcoming. It’s rare to find a place that delivers such high standards time after time. A big thank you to George, Alicia, and the whole team for always making our visits so enjoyable. We highly recommend the Fox and Roman and always look forward to coming back. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐”

“Booked The Fox & Roman for Sunday lunch at 12:15, so we were among the first diners in, which made the experience even more disappointing. Unfortunately, the food was pretty underwhelming. Both Sunday lunches arrived only lukewarm, as though they’d been sat under a heat lamp rather than served fresh. The pigs in blankets (an added extra) were overcooked, and the cauliflower cheese was bland and lacking the rich cheesy finish you’d expect. To be fair, staff did ask how everything was towards the end of the meal, and we mentioned the issues, but by that point the meal was effectively over so there wasn’t much that could be done. The biggest let-down was the value. Two trio Sunday lunches, three sides, two beers and a Pepsi came to over £70, which felt hard to justify for the quality we received. We’ve had far better Sunday lunches elsewhere for less money, which made this feel like a disappointing waste of money.”

“Visiting the area for a weekend we were looking for a dog friendly pub on Sunday evening, we found the Fox and Roman and were so pleased we did. The food was absolutely delicious, very generous portions and our dog was welcomed. Would definitely recommend and most certainly return when we’re back in York.”
