  “To begin, the young lady that served us was really nice and friendly; she was accommodating. She is the only reason I allowed the tip that was added without asking. The food came out hot soon after ordering. For nearly £50 for 2 people the food was terrible. Fried chicken goujons that were completely tasteless and dry, with coleslaw that looked like it had seen better days. The only flavour was the salt I added. It came with gravy that was lumpy and not a nice texture. Brisket macaroni cheese that tasted like it was out of a packet. The frickles were good, I can’t complain about those. This place was not at all what I was expecting, it was more like a takeaway shop. The prices are ridiculous to be honest and I won’t be going again. KFC is better. I should’ve known to go elsewhere when we walked in and the place was empty at 6pm.”

  “Fancy Hank's accommodated a group of 10 of us for lunch, with various dietary requirements. We had a great time and were impressed by the service and quality of the food. The Jambalaya was particularly popular. Would also recommend trying the slush of the day!”

  “I have been a big fan of Fancy Hanks over the years and would probably say I have gone 2-3 times a year on average every year for the past 6 years. For my first 3 years 2020-2023 every time we went it was amazing food, great quality, amazing service, well decorated and maintained etc. However the past 3 years and most recent experience today every-time has unfortunately become slowly less and less enjoyable and this will be the last time unfortunately. The food quality and how it was cooked for a burger and fries was genuinely like mcdonalds. Really dry meat, no flavour other then poor tasting quality beef and the fries were boiling but not even cooked (Again like floppy half cooked mcdonalds fries). The milkshakes are completely different, they are not thick, again feels like some McDonalds alternative flavouring milkshakes. I will say the starters with halloumi fries and the pork belly they have got right for years and they are still great. You can tell there has been some change over the last few years whether it’s staff turnovers or new owners but the cleanliness and overall upkeep of the place is to a lower standard. Little things like wallpaper rips, to old not working light bulbs that haven’t been replaced for over a year. The big one is the food quality. My family who would come once a year completely agree but it will always have a place in our hearts as it was our first experience of York. I hope it finds it spark again with the quality. This is not to say the staff aren’t nice, they are, I always appreciate the manager (What I presume he is) with his cheery nature.”

  “Food was amazing. Cannot fault it, I particularly enjoyed the frickles. I think they were maybe short on staff when we visited, but we did not wait long for our food and it was delicious. Would definitely go back.”

  “Not as good as I was expecting. Meal was just ok. Didn't feel safe as a person with gluten intolerance as given a handwritten allergen menu with initially no explaination and there was only 3 options on it that didnt have the gluten box ticked. Had to ask when given the order if things could be adapted as if they couldn't I would have had to leave. The server said they could just swap the bun for GF but obviously would check. Said there was a separate fryer. I had to ask if anything else was used in the oil. With my asking the server seemed to show disdain and wasn't helpful. Unfortunately this did not make me feel welcome. The meal came the burger was ok, bun fine but not the best. The chips weren't crisp at all, too dark in colour. Everything was greasy. Felt like the fryer for the chips had not been hot enough. I went along with it as my partner said his was fine. Later he disclosed the meal he felt was not good and wouldn't go back. Atmosphere was very stilted. Table extremely sticky like it had been wiped with a dirty old cloth. I know service charge is automatically put on but I prefer to pay what I feel the service was worth and quite frankly it was poor on this occasion. My partner has eaten in the states and this wasn't up to par. The price for the meal was too much considering the quality. I dont like doing bad reviews and from the reviews I wanted to like this place but sadly cant. Would not recommend.”
