About The Anchor Inn

On Brewood Rd in Wolverhampton, The Anchor Inn is a historic country pub right next to the canal towpath, so walkers can step straight from the path to the bar. The kitchen serves seasonal dishes alongside pub classics, with a Sunday roast of beef or lamb that comes with gravy and sides. Scallops appear as a starter, and the Bourbon apple tarte tatin finishes the menu. Cask ales are poured at the bar. The pub opens daily, so a visit fits any day of the week. The building has also been recently refurbished.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast is the dish reviewers return to most, with the beef and lamb, gravy and sides praised by one narrowboat visitor and the roast called fabulous by a regular. Close behind are the Sunday lunch trio, a smoked haddock fish cake and a bourbon apple tarte tatin. Reviewers also describe friendly, attentive staff, with several singling out individual servers for looking after their tables, and they like the outdoor seating beside the canal, which one notes is dog friendly. The main complaint is the kitchen. One diner waited a long time for both a mushroom starter and fish and chips, found the chips dry and the fish thin, and said a companion's slow cooked beef came with undercooked vegetables, attributing the problems to a new chef. Another found the scallops sold out and only bottled Peroni available. One reviewer advises booking in advance. In one party, the rib eye plates were returned empty.

“Visited The Anchor Inn on Sunday and it was great. Sunday lunch trio was very good. Others in party had Rib Eye and well all I will say is that plates were returned empty. Just one thing scallops had all gone so a little disappointed as they are my favourite starter. Also only bottled Peroni which isn't a good look at the dining table but had other draught beer so no worries. Finally staff are very professional and friendly. All of us enjoyed. Will be back hopefully scallops will be plentiful. Worth the money.”

“The Anchor Inn provided the two best meals we had on our narrowboat holiday. The restaurant, the outside seating, the drinks, food, and service were all exceptional. We were fortunate to get to have Sunday Roasts on our final day and the beef and lamb, along with the gravy and sides, were delicious.”

“Arrived at 1300 had a mushroom in cheese sauce which took 45minutes and the main course fish chips mushy peas took 50 minutes to arrive. Chips were dry and tasteless as though they were old chips, the fish was wafer thin and small and was dry the batter was okay .My wife had same starter but had the slow cooked beef with broccoli and carrot. She didn’t enjoy it and the vegetables were not cooked. We’ve been there lots of times but I was told there’s a new chef been there a month according to staff who we felt sorry for as everyone was moaning about how long service took, the kitchen cannot cope.We will not be going back until the kitchen sorts itself out.Glen”
