About Cwtch Cafe

Cwtch Cafe on Gerard St in Wigan operates as a daytime cafe with table service, open Monday to Saturday and closed Sundays. The kitchen turns out home made meal specials, with home made pie, chips and peas served alongside the belly-buster breakfast, and a jacket potato with cheese and beans among the other options. Seating covers a large number of people, and a step-free entrance means the space works for visitors with mobility needs, with high chairs on hand for families with young children. There is no booking system, so seating is offered on a walk-in basis. Beyond the cafe itself, outside catering is available, covering buffets built around home made sausage rolls and home made cakes.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is the draw at this Welsh cafe, with reviewers calling the breakfasts the best around and singling out the belly-buster breakfast, the largest breakfast with a latte, and generous, hot portions. Close behind are the home cooked meal specials, including a home made pie with chips and peas, plus a jacket potato with cheese and beans. Several mention a good cup of tea. Reviewers describe lovely staff, quick service from order to table, tables wiped down as soon as customers leave, and reasonable prices. One family used the cafe's outside catering for a funeral and praised the home made sausage rolls and cakes, vegetarian and gluten free options, and picnic boxes. The criticism is sharper but less common. One reviewer called the breakfast cheap and cooked without passion, describing the bacon as ok, the sausage as poor quality, the mushrooms as cheap mush and the tea as no better than a truckers cafe. Another was turned away at 8:52am despite an open sign on the door, was told to wait outside, and left for Wetherspoons, calling the staff snotty.
