About Peking house
Peking house is a Chinese takeaway in Whitehaven, at 42 Sneckyeat Rd, that opens evenings only from Wednesday to Sunday. The menu includes crispy quarter duck served with pancakes, spring onions, cucumber and plum sauce, so the duck can be wrapped at home. Kung po chicken and beef in black pepper sit among the main dishes, and Chinese cooking is the focus of the kitchen. Red Thai curry and chips also appear on the menu for those who want something outside the Chinese range. The shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Customer Review Summary
Chow mein is the dish diners name most, praised for real vegetables rather than a pile of noodles, with a chicken version called delicious. Close behind are the beef in black pepper, described by one reviewer as the best they have tasted, and the hot and sour soup, called not too sour and not too sweet. Others single out the quarter duck with pancakes, spring onions and cucumber, tasty and tender rather than fatty, along with Kung po chicken and a red Thai curry. Reviewers mention friendly people, fast delivery and great value, and one says the standard never drops. The complaints centre on timing and one on flavour. Two reviewers report food arriving very late or not at all on busy nights, one finding the phone seemingly off the hook. Another found the sauces thin and tasteless. One reviewer suggests ordering ahead because busy periods take a while. In one account, a driver turned away with a late order was followed by a call from the shop, which offered nothing to make amends.

“The only way you class this as food, is if you have never had food. I have had thicker cordial than the sauce we had over the 3 meals. If this is the only option for a Chinese, please run away!!! Never had anything so tasteless ever. Feel sorry for the locals.”

“Great food and value for money. We had hot & sour soups, Kung po chicken and chicken with Chinese mushroom, also egg fried rice. Hot & sour soup was great combination - not too sour and not too sweet. It was worth driving from the Seascale.”
