Quick info
About Oriental Garden
Oriental Garden is a Chinese takeaway in Whitehaven, based at Strand House. Orders go out for collection or delivery, and there is no dining room, so every meal is eaten elsewhere. The menu includes salt and pepper ribs, beef in black bean sauce and chips. Payment is cash only, and cards are not accepted, so customers need to bring cash when they collect or when the order arrives. The kitchen opens evenings only and closes on Tuesdays. Peak times are busy, and orders usually involve a wait.

Customer Review Summary
Reviews split sharply between warm praise and a reported recent slide in quality. Positive reviewers describe food that arrived piping hot and very tasty, with welcoming, courteous staff and a till worker who helped with an order. One says they always clear their plate, though they note busy days call for patience. Even a critical reviewer found the salt and pepper ribs and beef in black bean sauce tasty. The complaints are more detailed and come partly from longtime customers who say quality has fallen. Dishes described as disappointing include king prawns in soft batter that arrived as plain frozen prawns in a watery sauce, a black pepper fillet one diner says was not fillet, a brown, overly salty wonton soup broth, and prawn dumplings falling apart. One reviewer reports severe stomach illness after an order. Others mention overdone chips and unfriendly staff, and one received the wrong order after a long wait.

“Food poisoning: AVOID I had to go to the hospital and I passed out 3 times. My family have been ordering from this takeaway for years, the food in Whitehaven and the surrounding areas is abismal and this was the only okay takeaway in the area. Often when coming up to visit my mom we’d order from here the first night of my stay so we didn’t have to cook. We ordered last night after coming home late from a holiday, the food was poor it’s been going slowly downhill for a while but it hit that savoury, saucy, salty craving though as usual you slightly regret it later… I had to miss my train back to London today due to cramps, bad stomach, fever and projectile vomiting all day. Couldn’t get my train ticket refunded and had to spend a small fortune buying a ticket for tomorrow now with cover incase I’m still too sick to travel. Any restaurant that causes sickness should be avoided at all costs. After years of ordering from here we will not be returning. Our food was also nearly an hour late than what we had been told, wonton soup broth was brown and way way too salty and zero nappa cabbage or scallions, noodles felt stale from the Hong Kong style fine noodles, prawn dumplings were falling apart and just over all very poor, even without the crazy food poisoning.”

“Possibly the worse chinese dish I've ever experienced. I ordered King prawns in soft batter with a sticky Thai honey and lemon sauce. I actually received plain frozen prawns in a barely flavoured watery sauce ( if you can call it that) and a few pieces of veg...it was barely edible. The salt and pepper ribs , chips and beef in black bean sauce were far better and tasty and enhanced by lots of MSG ( which will make anything taste good) . £30 for 2 mains, 1 starter and chips. CASH ONLY , NO CARD ACCEPTED ( Wonder why ) Hmmmnnnnn. I wont return here again.”
