About Root Wells
Root Wells is a sharing-plates restaurant at 12 Sadler St in Wells, open daily. The kitchen is open and part of the dining room, and the small, tapas-style dishes are ordered to share and arrive as and when they are ready. Cornish mussels with cider are on the menu, alongside beetroot dishes and bread served with olive oil. Around nine vegetarian dishes are listed, and plate sizes can be adapted for solo diners. Tables can be booked through the website, and walk-ins are sometimes fitted in when the restaurant is busy.

Customer Review Summary
Diners return most for the shared small plates, with the Cornish mussels in cider and crème fraîche and the buttered mussels named alongside several beetroot dishes, including a sweet and sour version with stracciatella. Close behind are a leek dish one reviewer credits with making a birthday dinner, a smoky, tender beef brisket, and mini doughnuts with vanilla cream and apricot preserve. Others single out the olive oil served with the bread and the cheese puffs, and one group of four vegetarians worked through eight of the nine meat-free dishes. Reviewers describe dishes arriving as they are ready, a kitchen open to the dining room, a relaxed setting, and friendly, knowledgeable staff. One solo diner was offered smaller portions to try more plates. Another party, told the restaurant was fully booked on a Friday evening, got a call back shortly afterward because a table had opened up.

“We were lucky to get a table on Thursday evening last week as walk-in customers. It's clearly popular and we can see why. Fabulous small plate food!”

“Absolutely wonderful. I booked a meal for 4 vegetarians for my husband's birthday. They were flexible about the booking and the food and service was just wonderful. We had 8 of the 9 vegetarian dishes available plus bread and the cheese puffs. Each dish divided into 4 quite nicely and each was delicious. The variety and the range of flavours in each dish was inspired. A truely memorable meal and very reasonably priced considering 3 of us had a glass of wine. Well done Roots.”

“We are so glad we stumbled across this place while having a mooch around Wells and managed to book a table. I always love it when the kitchen is part of the restaurant, so this was an instant win for us. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout. We loved the tapas-style approach of ordering multiple dishes to share, although we probably ordered a few too many for just the two of us! The menu was so enticing that we simply couldn’t resist. The dishes arrive as and when they are ready, and we really enjoyed this staggered approach. It definitely helped us keep going after ordering as much as we did! Every dish was full of flavour and beautifully presented. There wasn’t a single item we regretted ordering. The olive oil served with the bread was something else! At the end of the meal, although we were full to the brim, we knew we had to try a dessert, purely based on how incredible all of our savoury dishes had been. We shared one between us and were not disappointed. If we return to Wells, we will definitely be returning to Root too. Highly recommended.”

“We stumbled across this restaurant on a short weekend break in Wells. The food was simply out of this world and the service was excellent. We would particularly recommend the beef brisket - so smoky and tender. Also the mini doughnuts with vanilla cream and apricot preserve - wow. Thank you so much - we will be back next time we are in the area.”

“What an incredible find! Popped in very last minute on a Friday evening. They were fully booked but took my number and called ten minutes later because they'd managed to fit us in. Such a warm, friendly team and the food was out of this world. Keep doing what you're doing because it's great.”
