About 日嚐食堂 Canteen

日嚐食堂 Canteen is a small restaurant at Unit 4 in Warrington, run by a Hong Kong couple with Hong Kong chefs in the kitchen. Sashimi rice bowls, called sashimi don, are the main focus, with sushi and sashimi offered alongside them. The Mega Crab Bowl combines crab meat, crab miso paste and soft shell crab. The Hokkai Don comes with assorted seafood sashimi and a miso fish soup. Cooked rice bowls are also on the menu, including a Katsu curry option for those who prefer something hot. Sushi and sashimi platters are made to pre-order, which suits larger orders planned ahead.

Customer Review Summary

Sashimi rice bowls anchor the praise, with diners repeatedly describing the fish as fresh and the presentation as beautiful. The Hokkai Don, with scallop, shrimp, surf clam and crab, and the assorted sashimi don come up most. The crab don and Mega Crab Bowl follow close behind for generous crab meat, crab roe and crispy soft shell crab. The Trio Tuna Rice Bowl, Katsu curry, beef don and sushi get shorter mentions, and one reviewer liked the seaweed potato croquettes with mochi for their soft, chewy texture. Staff are called friendly and welcoming, one family describes a server helping with their baby during the meal, and the room is called quiet. A couple of reviewers suggest booking ahead. The complaints are few but specific. One diner found the Hokkai Don portion slightly small for the price. Another takeaway order arrived hot in a paper bag with no divider between rice and soup, leaving the rice warm and the sashimi changed in colour. That family also disliked the brown rice with black sesame.

“Really Good! Yummy! We are coming from Leeds, and found this restaurant in Warrington. Although some reviews are not very good, but we think they are just not coming at a right time. So, we decided to have an early dinner here. Good food. Good service. Quiet. Parking at near car park just £2 for 3 hours. Sashimi tasted like fresh. Japanese rice and beef don cooked and seasoned with very good taste. Will come again if I visit Warrington again.”

“A passionated restaurant focusing on Japanese rice bowl, sushi and sashimi. It’s a small restaurant with cosy atmosphere. It was full house during our visit on a Sunday afternoon. Booking is recommended especially on weekends. I am impressed by the Mega Crab Bowl that was full of assorted crabs including soft shell crab, snow crab leg, claw & meat, tobiko and crab miso paste. The rice bowl was really “mega” and crabs were of good quality and nicely presented. Trio Tuna Rice Bowl was great too. Fishes were fresh and tasty. We would definitely try the Hokkaidon with assorted seafood sashimi and slow braised short rib with foie gras during our next visit. For customers who preferred cooked food, Wagyu Beef Rice, Eel with Tamago and Japanese Curry Rice Bowls would be a perfect choice. Other than rice bows and Japanese snacks/ starters, the pre-order sushi/ sashimi platters would be alternatives. Price was reasonable given the generous potion, high food quality and nice presentation. Staff are welcoming and friendly. It is operated 7 days a week. A good choice for both lunch and dinner. Off-road parking was available. Highly recommended especially for someone who are looking for good quality Japanese sashimi, sushi and snacks. Dedicated little restaurant with yummy dishes and good services.”

The sashimi was very fresh and high quality overall, although the portion size was slightly small and the price was on the expensive side. I also ordered the Japanese Seaweed Potato Croquettes with Mochi (£5), which had a soft and chewy texture without being overly greasy. However, I felt extremely thirsty after the meal, and I am not sure whether it was caused by the miso fish soup or the relatively strong seasoning of the rice bowl. 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷 👍🏻 Hokkai Don with Miso Fish Soup 🤙🏻 Japanese Seaweed Potato Croquettes with Mochi 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡 🅿️ Free on-street parking available outside the restaurant. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 日嚐食堂 Canteen Unit 4, New Media Centre, School St, Warrington WA4 1AT”
