Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the food and the friendly staff, with the skillet steak singled out in one account: a 5oz rump with red wine sauce on a bed of fried onions, plus mac and cheese, which that diner called incredible. Nacho fries as an upgrade were described as a unique option, and one group of 16 reported no bad meals. Close behind are portion sizes, fair pricing and the community feel, with several saying the pub has improved under its current owners and serves as home to the local Royal British Legion. Dog owners and families mention being welcome, and the children's play area gets a nod. One reviewer praised how allergens were handled, with orders triple checked and freshly washed cutlery and bowls brought out. The main complaint comes from a long-time regular who says a corner table near the play space, which the family always requests to help their autistic son, was roped off for someone reportedly auditing the venue, and staff would not accommodate them. Another diner was told chips could not be swapped for pub mash, even though mash is on the menu.

“Forster visited the Red Lion 5 years ago when we moved to the area and thought not the place for us. Since Sue and the team have been running the place what can we say it is now our go to place her the family and the rest of the team always give great service and value. The pub is truly part of the community and does an amazing job as home to the local Royal British Legion”

“Great experience, staff friendly and attentive. Food was lovely and good portion sizes. It was all hot, fresh and tasty. I upgraded to the nacho fries which were really nice and a unique option as haven’t seen these anywhere before.”

“Our first ever visit to the Red Lion in Penketh. We had a Dining Out gift card to use and decided upon this pub from the list of participating establishments. Depending on which way on the main road you come from, the parking isn't immediately obvious but there is plenty of it when you do locate the car park. There are indoor and outdoor dining options and service is via a QR code or you can go up to the bar and order food and drink with your table number. There is a children's play area section to this pub so bare that in mind that children may be running around and slightly noisy. The staff on our occasion were friendly and considerate especially since we ordered steak and the skillet was very hot which we were well informed about. The only let down with the food was we wanted to swap out the chips with our mains for pub mash and was told this wasn't possible. However, mash is an item on the menu so this should've been okay. The food was absolutely incredible, creative and tasty. We both ordered the exact same 5oz rump (medium well) with red wine sauce and one side of mac & cheese which was also incredible. The steak came on a bed of fried onions (we thought that was creative!) and the fries were in a separate dish and well seasoned. Our drinks were from the bottle but the selection on offer we appreciated. Our mains truly left an impression on us, very impressed for our first visit. Pricing was arguably this pub's best positive. Very fair in relation to selection and portion sizes. We would recommend based on this experience and will definitely visit again in the future.”
