Quick info
About Mario's Other Plaice
Mario's Other Plaice is a fish and chips takeaway on Howdle's Ln in Walsall, sited in a row of shops with food bagged or boxed to go. Fish is fried fresh to order and you choose between beef dripping or vegetable oil, while the chips are battered and cooked in beef dripping. Cod and fish and chips lead the orders, and the menu runs on to kebabs, doner meat and chicken with a naan or wrap, plus sides such as onion rings. Portions come large. Payment is cash only, so bring notes or coins rather than a card. High chairs are on hand for families with young children waiting on an order. The shop trades in the evenings from Thursday to Saturday, and ordering ahead is advised. Cooked food sits in a heated display box behind the counter.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is the draw, with the chips cooked in beef dripping singled out most often, described as crispy, rich and light and fluffy, and paired with cod cooked fresh to order. Close behind is the welcome, several regulars describe the same friendly greeting from the owner and staff on repeat visits, and portions come up again and again as generous or mammoth. Also mentioned are the battered chips, the kebabs, and orders of chicken and doner meat with a naan or wrap. Two reviewers push back firmly, both on grease. One describes bags and the special box arriving soaked in it, batter overcooked and falling apart, meat cut too thick to cook through, and free onion rings binned after apparently sitting in the warming box, alongside a shop they call dated and old looking. The other calls the food average and greasy from that same box, and objects to being asked for a review.

“very average food had far better, get real and stop asking for reviews bro your food ain’t that good it’s just soaked in grease and cooked and sat in that box thing”

“Was recommended this chop shop from a friend, he had been telling me to go here for months but I didn't listen as everyone says they're chippy is the best. Finally tried it after he continued to badger me about it and it's by far the best chippy I've ever had. There is not another chippy anywhere in the Midlands that even comes close. Lovely fish, amazing chips and good service.”

“I was recommended to try this Chip shop, I did eventually find it in a row of shops. I read the reviews and all read well, JD said let’s give it a try I can honestly say that most of it went in the bin, I did try to cut the meat a lot thinner to continue cooking it, it was so thick it was not cooked through for me, it was cut with a carving knife, I will remember to look at my regular shop to see how they cut it !! When I opened the bags, they were just so wet with grease, including the special box, the fish was cooked to order, the pictures speak for themselves, the fish was perfectly white and tasted nice without the batter, the batter overcooked and fell apart as I picked it up I ordered onion rings and they just got wrapped back up once opened and binned, they were free though, I can only assume it was due to them being in the box all night. I went in around 7.30 pm the box was just full of food which didn’t look good, no queues as it always advertised The camera never lies. The shop is very dated and old looking Hopefully, the photographs speak for themselves Not for us J & JD”
