Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the food, singling out well-presented mains such as salmon on ratatouille and slow cooked leg of lamb, with a Sunday roast and its large Yorkshire pudding close behind. Starters of calamari and beef bruschetta are called tender and delicious, a crab ravioli special is described as sublime, and one reviewer calls an espresso creme brulee the best restaurant dessert they have had in years. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and attentive, and several reviewers who brought dogs note how welcome they were, with indoor seating for diners with dogs and a water bowl provided. The renovated pub is praised for its outdoor space and room between tables, and one reviewer suggests reserving through Google at peak times. The main criticism comes from a vegetarian diner who found the stuffed aubergine's skin inedible and its stuffing tasteless, and felt it was overpriced. The waiter swapped it for the vegetarian roast with minimal fuss.

“Popped in for the first time this evening as a little bank holiday treat. Delicious food and great service. Had an espresso creme bruleè that was the best restaurant dessert I have had in years! Highly recommended.”

“Went here recently with my boyfriend and dog. They have a seating area indoors you can have food with a dog separate to the main seating area but still full enough that you're part of the restaurant. The staff got the dog a water bowl and were good with him. The food was great, we had a roast it was tasty and pudding was good too.”

“I had special friends visiting the area & wanted a good food pub to meet up with them & also doggy friendly. This pub has undergone great renovation since I used to live nearby, so it was a delight to spot it on the Internet as a suitable meeting point for our gathering. Lovely outside areas - grassy with bench tables, an outside "room" due to surrounding hedging next to the pub & a covered terrace too. Inside is very tastefully renovated. Then the food ... well that was absolutely stunning, we had 4 different dishes of mains and 2 options of desserts. All were equally beautifully presented & tasted divine. One of our party has been a Chef himself for nearly 40 yrs and if a visiting Chef is very happy with presentation & taste, then that must be 100% perfect. Thank you Piltdown Man Chefs! The Front of House staff were also lovely and very accommodating with the dogs who accompanied us. They checked on us regularly and service was faultless. I live 45mins away from here now but we will definitely be back, this was a 5* pub experience.”

  • Chris
“First visit to the Piltdown Man. The food was excellent. Well cooked and presented. The service was also brilliant; nothing was too much trouble. I also really liked the openness of the restaurant area and the pub in general. Plenty of room between tables. Probably great for family celebrations. I/we’ll be back.”
