About Cafe Chameleon @ The Gough Arms

Cafe Chameleon @ The Gough Arms runs an entirely vegetarian and vegan kitchen from its cafe and bar in Swansea, on Heol Glantawe. Burgers come with a vegan patty or halloumi, sauces and cheese are charged as extras, and pasta plates such as pea linguine sit alongside a hummus platter, with sauté potatoes served next to mains. Locally brewed beer pours on tap and can be taken away to drink off site. The space is small, and reservations are recommended. A step-free entrance and flat parking directly outside help visitors with mobility needs, while high chairs make room for families with young children, and dogs are welcome throughout. Outdoor seats let customers eat and drink in the open air. Platters scale to the table, from a version for two to a kids option. The kitchen serves Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary

The vegetarian and vegan menu draws the most praise, with reviewers singling out the pea linguine, a Welsh rarebit with poached eggs and mushroom, and a halloumi and chilli jam ciabatta, alongside the hummus platter, vegetable tart, tagliatelle and a carbonara one parent ended up sharing with a child. Close behind is the locally brewed beer on tap, which several mention sampling in a shot glass before committing to a pint, and one visitor highlights coffee made with oat milk. Others describe a warm, inviting riverside setting with a wood burning stove, and dogs and babies coming up as welcome. The burger is the recurring letdown: one reviewer found it just a bun, lettuce and a vegan patty, with sauce and cheese charged extra. Another describes a wholly different visit, a dry bun, potatoes with no flavour, very little coleslaw and a long wait in a room made noisy by one large table, and says they will not return.

“Fantastic experience, nice atmosphere and beautiful food. Dog and baby friendly, would recommend”

“Positive - the gentleman serving was a very polite guy. Negatives - The atmosphere. A group of 4 women and 3 kids. Acting like they were the only ones in there. Very very noisy in such a small place. No consideration of others trying to chat quietly and eat their food. If I worked there I would have respectfully asked them to keep the volume down!! Food - For what you pay you don't get much at all. The bun was dry, no flavour on the potatoes and very little coleslaw. Wait - I appreciate if it's very busy but it really wasn't. 2 tables had already eaten. The noisy table were all eating desserts ( yes I thought they'd be gone sooner but they didn't)! From our drinks being served we waited 55 mins for our meal. Very disappointed indeed. Will not be returning!”

“Food is superb, and the menu has improved every time we've visited recently, likewise to the beer selection on tap. Fantastic vegetarian and vegan options, lovely atmosphere in a fun and very cool environment. Café Chameleon is a place that clearly cares a lot about their offerings and is working hard on improving it. Highly recommend.”

“In my opinion, cafe chameleon has the best food in Ystradgynlais. We ordered the halloumi burger, the hummus platter and the tagliatelle- all of which was delicious. The staff is friendly; the atmosphere is inviting and comfortable. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy good food and a beautiful town.”
