About PHO 179

PHO 179 is a Vietnamese restaurant at 15 Waterloo Pl in Sunderland, and it is the first Vietnamese restaurant in the city centre. The menu is built around pho, including a wok fried pho with chicken, rice noodles and herbs, and bun cha is ordered alongside it and can take a little longer to prepare. Soy sauce and chilli paste are already on the tables, so diners can season their bowls as they like. The restaurant is open daily, and a small banh mi shop sits next door. The drinks list includes original Vietnamese iced coffee and bottled beers.

“I was in Sunderland with Work and needed a place to eat on a sunday afternoon. Having walked around for ages past closed places, me and my friend spotted Pho 179 open and gave it a try. I have also never tried Vietnamese food prior to this. I had the Wok Fried Pho with Chicken, absolutely divine. Loads of flavour and a great portion size. I also love that the tables have Soy sauce and Chilli paste already there for you to use. This was truly comfort food. My friend had the Udon noodles with Chicken, she said the same. Absolutely delicious. The service is top tier and food comes quick. Overall, this place is a gem. Im just sad i live nearly 100 miles away so i cant come regulary. But i will absolutely be back. The prices are also more than fair.”

“Fantastic food. Couldn’t fault. Staff very friendly but not that high standard of taking the plates away quickly etc - it felt more like a diner experience than restaurant but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s quite casual but again not a bad thing. It was also quite cold with door opening for uber eats etc - they could do with using a separate entrance for these pickups. Bottle authentic beers nice. Definitely go if you’re thinking about it - the food is outstanding!! Also a very clean place.”

“The food here is fantastic! We had the dumplings, morning glory, caramelised pork belly and the bun cha. Everything tasted delicious, but the stand out was the bun cha. It was so flavourful and tasted exactly like the bun cha’s we had in Vietnam! The service was also excellent. Would recommend for a fantastic meal in Sunderland!”

Customer Review Summary

Pho draws the most praise, from the wok fried pho with chicken to the special pho, with reviewers describing a rich, aromatic broth, tender beef and smooth rice noodles. Bun cha comes close behind, and one diner says it tasted exactly like the versions they had in Vietnam. Others name dumplings, morning glory, caramelised pork belly, spring rolls, udon with chicken and the Vietnamese iced coffee. Service is called friendly, quick and professional, and several mention fair value and generous portions. The caveats are specific. One reviewer found the pho serving and meat portions small compared with restaurants in Newcastle. Another says bun cha sometimes takes longer to prepare. A third reports the room turning cold when the door opens for delivery pickups, and says plates were cleared slowly, making it feel more like a diner than a restaurant. One reviewer found the catfish tasty but very rich in marinade and boney. A first-time Vietnamese diner liked that soy sauce and chilli paste were already on the tables.
