Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the service from one server, described as friendly, attentive and approachable, who looked after family Sunday lunches and left diners calling the visit one of their favourites. Close behind is the carvery itself, where reviewers mention four different meats, a large selection of vegetables, vegetarian options and plenty of sweets. One group also praised a cooked breakfast for seven as done to perfection. Several otherwise positive reviews add that the food was not that hot or could have been warmer. The negative reviews are specific. One describes dried-up meat, missing gravy and a lumpy second bowl. Another found parsnips too tough to cut, overcooked carrots, odd-tasting mash and a long wait for drinks, though the meat was nice. A third reported dry food with no beef, a rude meat server, and an email reply to their photos that disputed the complaint. Even so, diners repeatedly mention the friendly welcome and plenty of parking spaces.

“Oh dear what a disappointment. Waited ages to be served drinks. The meal was terrible. It was hardly warm. Parsnips so tough could hardly cut them. Carrots which were maybe frozen, were so overcooked they were inedible. Mash was just plain odd, had a strange taste, didn't seem to have any butter/milk or cream in, possibly onion?? I suppose the clue was there when the car park was practically empty on a bank holiday lunch time. One thing the meat was nice”

“Service was wonderful. Polite and friendly staff, especially Carol. Who was friendly and approachable. Food was nice but, sadly was not that hot. Still enjoyed. Plenty parking spaces. All told a lovely afternoon at, the Toby Carvery (Barnes, Sunderland).”

“I haven’t been to the Barnes carvery for years and I was over the moon to find the quality was still exceptional. We were served by Carol. She was such a breath of fresh air! She served us in such a friendly manner and exceptional professionalism. We ate the carvery. 4 different meats and a large selection of vegetables. They even cater for vegetarian. Thanks go to Carol.”
