About Chez Mumtaj
Chez Mumtaj is a modern Indian restaurant on London Road in St Albans, where the kitchen draws on French and Asian cooking and offers a tasting menu. The dining room is wood-panelled and subtly lit, with white tablecloths on the tables and a small bar area at the entrance. Staff open the door for guests on arrival and again on leaving. On the menu, lamb xacutti and paneer Manchurian sit alongside the French and Asian influences, and the drinks list includes salted lassi. A lunch and early bird set menu runs on into the evening.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the prawns, described as big and delicious, whether the garlic chili prawns or tiger prawns, with the lamb close behind, including the rogan josh and a lamb xacutti called tender and unique. Reviewers also name the Mumtaz salad, coriander naan, spinach with paneer, chicken tikka masala and mango brulee, and several praise innovative dishes and good portions. Service is described as friendly, efficient and attentive, with one reviewer noting staff who open the door and escort guests out with a smile. The interior is called classy and upmarket, and one reviewer praises the cocktails. Complaints are milder. One reviewer found the food a bit expensive and the dining room empty, with a wait to get a table for two. Another felt service was average and was bothered that the music was turned off on a Saturday night. A late diner sensed staff were eager to close. One reviewer who tried the tasting menu found the quality unchanged after years away.

“Would really recommend this place. The interior feels quite upmarket and the staff are very attentive. But most of all the food is delicious and good portions. Lived in St Albans a while and hadn’t tried this place before but will definitely be back.”

“A very posh place — you immediately feel the elegance and cleanliness as soon as they open the door for you. When you leave, they escort you to the way out, opening the door with a big smile and thanking you, which makes the experience feel very special. The food is amazing — definitely one of the best Indian restaurants in town. We had the poppadoms, chicken tikka masala, and saffron rice, and everything was absolutely delicious. The flavours were rich and authentic, and the presentation was beautiful. The service is outstanding — truly the best ever. Highly recommended.”

“Having walked past many times we finally caved and came for the lunch and early bird special. Although one of the more expensive set menus in St Albans at £21.95 PP it is one of the few that runs into the evening. Chez mumtaj certainly delivers on flavour, we ordered: Garlic chili prawns Aloo Tikki Lamb rogan Josh Paneer Manchurian This came with butter naan and garlic naan Each dish had its own separate flavour and were all delicious. The prawns were a particular treat along with the lamb. Service was friendly and efficient. Not pushy, the waiter checked if we wanted more drinks etc. We will 100% come back.”
