Customer Review Summary
Service draws the main complaints. One reviewer describes a Hugo Spritz first refused, then served to another table, and staff repeatedly checking the menu. Another reports a waiter arguing with a table that said it waited a long time for food, and one reviewer calls the pasta very overpriced. A breakfast party received stale burger buns with only the top half replaced, and a service charge added to the bill. One brunch visit had the fryers and hobs down, so truffle crisps replaced fries.

“We went to Penelope’s for our 5th Anniversary, it was my first time and my wife has been a few times before. The restaurant itself is beautiful, clean and has a lovely atmosphere with a pianist playing. My wife has the Lasagna in garlic bread bowl and loved it, she couldn’t finish it so she gets the rest for lunch tomorrow. I had the Filet Mignon medium rare with peppercorn sauce and the thick cut beef dripping chips and it was amazing, steak cooked to perfection, the oil is clean so the chips are so crisp and don’t taste of oil at all and the sauce and jus tastes amazing, yes it costs a bit more but it’s more than worth it and I can’t wait to go back again. Staff were really welcoming and pleasant, checked if our food was okay but didn’t over-do it which is exactly how I like it. Can’t wait to go back!!”

“Had the Sunday roast here and it was soo nice. Really tasty with lots of different sides on the plate. There were plenty of options for food and drinks. I had a smoothie which was really nice. For dessert we had the key lime pie cheesecake, it was a little strange as it was deconstructed but tasted lovely anyway.”

“Visited Penelope's last week. The first impression was really good; the place looks very nice. We ordered pasta in a garlic bread bowl. The Chicken and Chorizo pasta was really nice, but the Marry Me Chicken was completely bland—no spices, no sun-dried tomato pesto, and I couldn't taste any parmesan sauce. It was just bland pasta in tomato sauce. Our table had no problem with service; the waitress who was serving us was really good. Unfortunately, however, there was a really unpleasant incident at the table next to us. Those people were waiting for 1.5 hours for their food. When they finally received it and told the waiter that they had been waiting that long, the waiter started arguing with them... Very unprofessional. Then he started asking us to confirm what time they had ordered. At the end, he came over and apologised to us, but when we told him that his behaviour was really unprofessional, he started blaming the clients again. Honestly, absolutely ridiculous. The waiter should be fired straight after arguing with clients. That should never have happened. Overall, the place could be nice, but the food is nothing special and VERY overpriced. Almost £30 for a bowl of pasta... And it looks like the service is a gamble.”

“I’ve been to Penelope’s a couple of times recently and while the interiors are lovely, the service has felt a little hit and miss. The staff are very young, which isn’t an issue at all, but it did seem like there was a lack of familiarity with the menu. When we asked questions, there was quite a lot of back and forth with staff having to check multiple times, which made ordering a bit difficult. We ordered two Hugo Spritz and were initially told they couldn’t be made as they had run out. However, shortly afterwards we saw another table receive Hugo Spritz, which left us a bit confused. By the time everything had been clarified and sorted and we found out the reason they couldn’t do a Hugo spritz because they had ran out of mint (we just then had without mint), our food had arrived and we had only just managed to sort drinks. I had the Nourish Bowl and added chicken for nearly £7 extra. I didn’t mind paying the supplement, but the portion/quality of the chicken didn’t quite feel reflective of the additional cost. It was also a bank holiday, so I was slightly surprised that key ingredients for popular drinks such as a Hugo Spritz weren’t sufficiently stocked. The venue itself is beautiful and has great potential I just think some additional staff training, stronger menu knowledge and smoother service organisation would really elevate the experience.”
