Quick info
About The Rockstone
The Rockstone is a pub on Onslow Road in Southampton, with a food menu run in collaboration with Woosabi Asian Street Kitchen. That kitchen brings bao buns and Wagyu smash burgers to a pub setting, so the menu pairs Asian street food with the bar. The room has a red brick fireplace and wooden floors. Unity beers are on tap, alongside craft beers, ales and ciders. Sundays follow a different menu, with a roast served and the bao buns off the list. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Bao buns anchor most of the praise, part of an Asian street kitchen collaboration that diners say lifts the pub menu. Close behind are the Korean fried chicken, karaage, Wagyu smash burgers and salted fries with a hint of truffle, while the craft beers and ales get compliments too. Several describe friendly, welcoming staff and a relaxed, cosy room. One reviewer calls it the best roast in Southampton. The caveats are specific, and Sunday is the sore point. Bao buns are not served that day, and one diner arriving late in the afternoon found most of the roast menu sold out. Their beef was chewy and dry, a pig in blanket was black, parsnips, swede mash and cauliflower cheese were missing, and the fire had gone out. Another reviewer found the platter's fried items had a bad aftertaste and the burger salty. One notes slow food and no background music, and one reports flies inside. Still, a table beside a roaring fireplace is what several describe.

“The food was good. They have a good selection of beers. The service was great. I have to ding them on the atmosphere as we found it to be a very annoying they had a lot of flies inside the restaurant. We found it very annoying trying to eat our food and keep flies away from it at the same time. Keep in mind they do not serve Bao Buns on Sundays. We were so disappointed. They only have sunday roast on the menu for Sundays.”

“The best roast in Southampton. Atmosphere is always nice, relaxing music, food is honestly outstanding and the staff are always so accommodating even on busy hectic days they are still lovely and go above and beyond and nothing is ever too much. Today Ben served us and we had yet another exceptional experience. Definitely will be returning again. And the ales are great too!”

“The Rockstone is an absolute find in Southampton! This place has such a unique character – it's a proper, historic pub with wooden floors and a cosy fireplace, but it's been given a new lease of life with a brilliant collaboration with Woosabi Asian Street Kitchen. The result is one of the best pub food experiences around. The food is simply outstanding. You have to try the bao buns – they are, as one reviewer put it, "to die for" [citation:3, 5]. The Korean fried chicken and the classic pork bao are packed with flavour. The burgers are also phenomenal; the "Last 63" burger is a monster and the spicy "Volcano" is a real challenge for heat-seekers. They also have a fantastic range of vegan and veggie options, with plenty of choice. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is relaxed and cosy, especially when the fire is lit . They've got a great selection of craft beers and ciders, and the two beer gardens are perfect for a sunny afternoon. They also do a legendary Sunday roast. This is a must-visit – I can't recommend it enough!”

“I went to the Rockstone for a Sunday roast. We went for early evening/late lunch. As we walked in we were told that the only thing left was roast beef as they had already sold out of everything else during lunch. We were happy with having beef so we sat down as was given menues. The staff told us that they had the beef, possibly veggie? And one starter. So we both ordered a beef roast and drinks to be served very nice and quickly. The roast came out and first impressions was disappointing. It felt like it was missing something, one of the pigs in blankets were black and the beef was mostly grey. I had looked at pictures before coming and the plates were full and the beef was pink. Then I red the menu again to realise they hadn’t told us they had no sweed mash and no parsnips which were both listed to come. We did have pigs in blankets which I guess were a substitute but had I been told half the veg was missing we wouldn’t have stayed. Also no cauliflower cheese which I had to ask about to be let down with none of that either. I am shocked that most of the menu had sold out before 4pm and felt bad for anyone who had a dinner booking. The food we had was nice despite the black pig in blankets. The potato’s were amazing and carrots were cooked to perfection. The beef however was pretty chewy and quite dry. The smoky flavour was great but we could tell it had been sat there all morning after being cooked. The pub was quite empty at the time we went which is expected, but it was absolutely freezing. We sat near the fire which had gone out and I had to wear my scarf the whole time. Given a better day they I’d like to give them another chance. On Sunday, it wasn’t worth my time or money.”
