About the Orange Bird
The Orange Bird is an independent restaurant in Sheffield, at 78 Middlewood Rd, where the food is cooked over a braai in an open kitchen. The lamb curry hummus is ordered as a starter and comes with mosbolletjies alongside. The menu is small and leans on curry, with the fish in Durban curry among the mains. Dessert includes a miso malva pudding. The dining room is a small venue, so the open kitchen and the dining space sit close together.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the lamb hummus, calling it "like velvet" and finished in minutes at one table. Close behind are the caramelised aubergine and the curry dishes, including the sea bream with clams, fish in Durban curry and the curry butter chips. Several also praise the peri peri chicken with morogo, the mosbolletjies served with the hummus, and puddings such as the miso malva, peppermint cake and sponge with stout ice cream. Diners describe the grill and braai cooking as full of flavour, and the open kitchen, relaxed atmosphere and servers who explain the menu come up repeatedly. The main caveats are space and choice. Several say the small room fills quickly, with one booking a month ahead for a Saturday, and one reviewer notes the short menu limits choice. Another felt the service could have been more welcoming. Even so, one party without a reservation was seated until the next booking arrived, and a server ran up the road to return a diner's forgotten sunglasses.

“Wonderful little restaurant. The food is absolutely out of this world and beautifully presented, and the portion size is perfect. Drinks are very reasonably priced. The open kitchen is a lovely touch and staff are very attentive and great at explaining the menu and were even kind enough to run up the road to return my sunglasses that I accidentally forgot. The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed. We will definitely be back and well worth the wait!”

“Cosy, chilled vibes and really flavourful food! The menu isn’t too overwhelming, which makes it easy to choose, and everything we tried was delicious. I especially loved the mosbolletjies with the lamb curry hummus — definitely order them together. The peri peri chicken was succulent, full of flavour, and highly recommended with the morogo. The caramelised aubergine was also quite good. Make sure to book in advance, as they get very busy. We hadn’t made a reservation and they were fully booked, but the staff were lovely and still managed to seat us until the next booking arrived. There’s also a park nearby if you plan on going for a walk to burn the calories 😁”

“Had excellent food here about a month ago and great service - such a small venue we had to book a month in advance for a Saturday but worth it! Curry butter chips a highlight as well as the hummus starter (finished by the table in about 2 minutes!) and the miso malva pudding. Small menu always good, as it means it has been perfected, however means limited choice too, so will return again if the menu gets a refresh.”
