Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the home cooked pub food, with the hanging kebab and the steak pie or meat and potato pie with chunky chips named most. Close behind are the steak and kidney pudding, which one reviewer hopes to try, a club sandwich, chicken tikka masala, and sesame chicken with coconut rice. Diners also mention gammon and eggs, caramel apple crumble and custard, and generous portions at reasonable prices. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and helpful, and the quiet, lovely atmosphere and plentiful beers get praise. The caveats are mostly about service. One reviewer waited a long time despite few other diners, and another saw a starter never arrive but did not think it worth a complaint. One two-star account describes nachos for two that came as nachos for one and burnt on top, a ploughman's with stale bread, stale cheese and a dry pork pie, and a steak and kidney pudding with hardly any filling. That reviewer felt a complaint would go unheard, though the scampi and chips was decent.

“We met friends here for dinner one Thursday evening. I had a hanging kebab, his nibs had the Gamon and eggs, which were both fantastic. The portions were a really great size. The staff were so friendly and very helpful. There's plenty of parking too.”

“Fantastic pub in a small village, food is always fantastic, as is seating layout, loads of different beers etc. service was a tad disorganised with a starter not being brought but not really worth a complaint. Staff very pleasant and well presented. Love coming here for a few pints and some lunch.”

“Passed by early afternoon and needed some lunch. Called in and had a superb home made steak pie! Delicious, with superbly cooked chunky chips. Really lovely. Very friendly barman, nice place. Plenty of other folks in eating really good looking food. Noted for best time I pass by.”

“Called for lunch today with my mum, sister & cousin. We've not been to the Lord Nelson for many years & decided to pay another visit when deciding where to go for lunch. Well, what an absolute pleasure it was, superb & friendly service, lovely atmosphere & food was delicious. 3 of us had meat & potato pie with chunky chips, mushy peas & a decent portion of nice thick gravy. I had veggie burger with chunky chips & relish. Then for dessert we had 3 caramel apple crumble & custard + 1 chocolate fudge cake with ice-cream. The only way to describe it is proper, very tasty, home cooked grub 👍🏼 Thank you, we will definitely be back & recommending to friends & family, also I hope to bring my husband next time, he'll love the pie!”
