About Kurdistan Restaurant

On Spital Hill in Sheffield, Kurdistan Restaurant is a Middle Eastern restaurant that brings out a complimentary bowl of lamb and lentil soup while diners wait for their food. The menu runs to lamb and chicken shish and kofte skewers served with fresh salad and sauces, alongside lamb or chicken quzi with rice, with biryani rice offered as a separate option. Warm naan is refilled repeatedly at the table, and side accompaniments such as okra, aubergine, courgette, chickpeas and tabbouleh round out the spread. A homemade Laban yogurt drink is available on request. The dining room downstairs is plain and unfussy, while family seating is kept upstairs. The entrance is step-free and wheelchair accessible, making the space workable for visitors with mobility needs. The restaurant opens daily, and reservations are recommended, since the room gets busy and service can be stretched at peak times.

Customer Review Summary

The lamb sheesh kebab and mixed grill draw the most praise, described as tender and full of flavour, with the lamb quzi and grilled sea bass or salmon also mentioned as regular choices. Reviewers consistently highlight the freely refilled bread and a complimentary bowl of lamb or lentil soup brought before the meal, alongside side dishes like tabbouleh, okra and chickpeas, and specials such as Friday dolma or Saturday bulgur-kofte. Hospitality and the owner's warmth come up repeatedly, with several describing the place as good value and a long-standing family favourite. Some caveats recur: a few note the hummus texture is thin, the biryani is hit or miss for some while others loved it, and when busy, service can get frayed, with one diner recalling being answered loudly and abruptly about rice pricing. One reviewer reports a distinctly bad visit, describing undercooked rice, an off smell from the lamb chops, and soup they found disgusting, throwing the meal away entirely. Most others, though, return regularly, bringing friends who become regulars themselves.

“This is a fantastic family‑run Kurdish restaurant serving totally authentic cuisine, and the quality here is honestly second to none. The meat is absolutely top quality — I had the lamb sheesh kebab, and it was so tender, juicy and full of flavour it just melted in the mouth. It comes with fresh salad, delicious sauces and warm naan bread, which they keep refilling for you again and again until you are full — such a lovely touch and great value too. I’ve also tried the grilled sea bass on a previous visit and that was excellent as well; perfectly cooked, fresh and full of taste. It’s not a fancy or overly dressed‑up place — it’s just a proper, everyday local gem — but it is always busy, and that alone tells you everything you need to know about how good it is. If you’re coming with family or a larger group, there’s seating upstairs too, which is perfect because the downstairs area can get very lively and packed out. The service here is honestly the best I’ve experienced anywhere. The owner is incredibly efficient, warm and welcoming, and he really goes out of his way to make sure you have everything you need and that you’re enjoying your meal. Every single time you visit, they bring you a complimentary bowl of rich, tasty lamb soup while you wait for your food — such a nice, generous tradition that really adds to the experience. I travel specifically to come here because I know the quality will always be perfect, the food authentic and the welcome genuine. If you love great Kurdish food, fresh ingredients and service with a smile, you absolutely have to visit — you won’t be disappointed!”

“Five stars without hesitation. I have been coming to Kurdistan Restaurant for more than ten years, usually every couple of months, and it remains one of my favourite places to eat in Sheffield. The grilled meats are the anchor: lamb and chicken shish, kofte and other skewers, served with fresh salad and sauces that make the plate feel complete. The venue-baked bread is excellent and free-flowing, and the welcome bowl of lentil soup and bottle of water say a lot about the generosity of the place before the main food even arrives. The side accompaniments are also much better than routine: okra, aubergine, courgette, chickpeas, tabbouleh, and even a spiced apricot and raisin option. The lamb or chicken quozy with rice is very satisfying, and the Friday dolma and Saturday bulgur-kofte are worth knowing about. Downstairs is an unfussy dining room, with family dining upstairs. When it gets very busy, service can get a little frayed and execution may vary slightly, but the baseline has always remained comfortably good, and the welcome stays warm, informal and good-natured. Generous portions, fresh cooking, free-flow bread and fair pricing make this one of Sheffield’s best-value meals. I have introduced many friends to it, and many have become regulars too.”

“Food wasn't as tasty as it used to be. The kubz (bread) was the tastiest I have had in a very long time. I couldn't get enough of it. Unfortunately the food itself was a big disappointment..”

“Really enjoyed this place. The lamb biryani was proper tasty — full of flavour and cooked perfectly. Nice welcoming vibe as well, felt really comfortable eating here. Love to the Kurdish people.”
