Quick info
About Happy Chinese Takeaway
Happy Chinese Takeaway is a Chinese takeaway at 290 Prince of Wales Rd in Sheffield, cooking Cantonese-style dishes for collection. Salt and pepper chips come coated in batter, which gives the Cantonese-style mains a chip side with a different texture from plain fries. The menu also lists Singapore chow mein and dry ribs with lemon, so an order can mix noodles and a starter in one go. The kitchen opens in the evenings.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers split sharply, and the happiest ones praise authentic Cantonese style cooking. The crispy spring rolls and chicken balls with quality chicken come up, along with crispy chili beef, roast duck, fried wonton, Singapore chow mein and dry ribs with lemon. One first-time customer got food that arrived early and piping hot. The complaints are just as specific. Several describe deliveries through ordering apps arriving hours late, with a driver shortage blamed, a rude phone call and food that was cold or barely lukewarm. Spring rolls turned up soggy and greasy, and the curry was swimming in grease. Salt and pepper chips are a repeated sore point, with heavy batter and hardly any potato inside. Egg fried rice is called far too salty by more than one diner, and shredded chicken was tough. One reviewer says a late order left a diabetic partner feeling unwell. Another asked about the battered chips and was told that is simply how they make them, and a refund was refused.

“If you like to include salt and pepper chips to your Chinese takeaway, then DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE! They cook them in lots of batter. I thought they'd sent the wrong item but I rang and described what I'd received and they said that's how they make them. Very bizarre. My mum had to go to another Chinese to pick my daughter some salt and pepper chips up from another takeaway, as this was all she wanted to eat. The shredded chicken doesn't have much chicken in, and was tough to chew, but didn't taste too bad.The special chop suey and chow mein were okay but didn't include beef. Very disappointed customer.”

“Appalling Chinese, by far the worst I’ve ever eaten. Ordered through just eat at 6pm last night, for it to arrive at 7pm. Gets to 7pm and then just eat notifies us the restaurant says 7:30 for delivery instead. Not the worst, however by 7:45 this hadn’t turned up. I rang them to ask where our order was, and they hung up the phone the first time as it went to voicemail. The second time I rang back and the man who answered the phone was quite rude and said “oh we couldn’t get a driver , we will be 15 minutes bye” and hung up. No apology. It arrived at 8:15 pm at night , so 2.5 hours after ordering. The food was bland, salt and pepper chicken and chips were a pathetic excuse, 3 onion slices and ONE chilli ring, no seasoning at all, the chicken was the same and very rubbery & the oyster beef smelt so bad we couldn’t even eat it, it made my partner gag. Never will order again from this place. Gone massively downhill.”

“Amazing Chinese food. Never had a bad experience ordering from here. The crispy springs rolls are amazing. Chicken balls are crispy with quality chicken. Highly recommend.”

“The reviews don’t do this place justice at all, I ordered the first time and tried their food and absolutely fell in love with it, I’m currently on hyper fixation mode and I’m having to limit myself to eating from here once a week . THATS HOW OBSESSED I AM WITH THEIR FOOD. My go to orders the Singapore chow mein, the vege chow main and the dry ribs with lemon and they are amazinggggg. I went to shop once and the guy there was actually really nice. And the delivery service/ guy is quite nice too. Deserves more credit🤗 my only issue is it opening at 5pm so having to wait😂but that’s a serious problem 😌”
