About The Stables Cafe

The Stables Cafe is a small cafe in Sheffield on Wales Pl, next door to a bar that hires out body suits and surf boards. The menu runs to 27 items, with burgers and chips built around the 4oz Classic Beefburger and the Chicken Fillet Burger. Hot coffee, cakes and pasties sit alongside the burgers for those who want something lighter. Orders are placed at the counter, and food arrives in a polystyrene container. The cafe is open daily, daytime only, and it can get busy on a nice day. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers repeatedly point to the food as the main source of disappointment, describing the classic beef burger as burnt and resembling “processed protein fibres” served in a polystyrene box, while the chips are called “very oily” and even tossed back by staff. The vegetable soup arriving in an instant-coffee cup with a wooden fork and the lack of true vegan options, such as “veggie” sausages fried in the same oil as meat, also draw criticism. Service is frequently labeled rude or unfriendly, with several accounts of staff refusing refunds, forgetting paid orders, and reacting angrily when confronted. On the positive side, the coffee is noted as “nice and tasty,” and the cafe’s small, convenient setting earns remarks about reasonable prices and a pleasant spot for a quick snack. One reviewer highlights the burger’s polystyrene container as a clear sign of the kitchen’s shortcomings.

“No vegan options. “Veggie” sausages fried in same oil as meat. Not even vegetarian. Pointless option.”

“Nice little cafe selling a range of hot drinks, cakes and pasties. Reasonable prices.”

“Absolutely terrible, ordered a burger it was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen, like burnt thin processed protein fibres. Went back in and asked for my money back, the first younger lady behind the counter took one look at it and said, “oh yes” then the older woman with black hair behind the counter who was on the till and the moment process the refund, didn’t even apologise so clearly this is the standard of food they accept to serve. She was very rude and clearly annoyed I was asking for a refund. I would have been embarrassed to serve this to a customer. The food is served in a polystyrene box, I took the burger out the box and asked if I should just throw it in the bin. She then took a chip from the side and threw it in my box, which I removed. She then threw it back in again. I said no I want the chips and she huffed and said “I’ve refunded you for those” and tried to snatch them out my hand. Unbelievably poor service. I did then slam the burger on the side and said I wouldn’t feed that to my dog! I was just very frustrated by the poor service, poor food and lack of apology. In any other service industry most people would probably have said keep the chips as an apology anyway. Absolutely awful.”
