Quick info
About The Boat Inn Pub
Set on Birdingbury Wharf with views of passing canal boats, The Boat Inn Pub is a family restaurant and pub that pulls together indoor seating, an outdoor area, and tables right by the water. The kitchen leans on home-made cooking, with Sunday roasts, a home-made chilli con carne, and pizzeria-style pizza sitting alongside the usual pub classics. Afternoon tea is offered too, including a two-hour day trip with afternoon tea on board. Dogs are welcome, and a private dining room at the back takes groups looking for a quieter setting. The team handles reservations for planned tables, and walk-ins are taken when space allows.

Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers praise the homemade food and friendly service, with the Sunday roast singled out as one of the best around, alongside a well-regarded homemade chilli and afternoon tea. A few diners, however, describe the kitchen differently, reporting frozen, overpriced pizza and onion rings, slow service on a quiet Saturday, and lukewarm vegetables on the roast. Two reviewers also warn about loose slabs on the steps outside.

“We came for lunch here and a couple of drinks having the home made chilli con carne which was beautiful. Lovely seating indoor and outdoor or by the canal. We saw the canal boats and booked the 2 hour day trip with afternoon tea at a great price. The afternoon tea was lovely and well presented.”

“Ate dinner Thursday evening. Friendly service. Food well cooked. Reasonably priced. Would recommend for sure.”

“What a gem, ate there few times whilst moored close by on our narrowboat, sunday roast being the best we've ever had at a pub, and we've had a few!! The owners are super friendly, the chef Steven is a true gem and Olivia the lovely server/bar person was so polite and friendly, if you are close to this pub you must try it, trust me, you won't be disappointed, everything really is home made.”

“THE SLOW BOAT! It's telling when you arrive at a pub on a Saturday evening and it's empty. Even though it was quiet the 2 staff behind the bar seemed to not see us for several minutes but eventually we were served. Another customer arrived as we were being served and was totally blanked by the other member of staff who was to busy checking her nails. We"d reserved a table as we wanted a meal we ordered at 19:55 and after chasing finally got our food at 20:45 without any apology. I'd hate to see how they cope if they get more than the meager few customers they had. Absolutely no atmosphere just dire. Food was ok but by the time it arrived we'd lost interest in it. Look out for the loose slabs on the steps outside.”

“For the price, taste, quality and service this is possibly one of the best Sunday roasts in the local area. The only disappointment was the luke warm vegetables and plate and over cooked potatoes.”
