Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the roast lunch, with one calling it among the best they have had, and burger and fish and chips drawing similar praise. Close behind are the starters and desserts: asparagus with Parma and poached egg, smoked salmon, beef and mushroom pie, ribs, sticky toffee pudding, brownie and eton mess. Several describe the staff as friendly and the service as relaxed, and the decor as quirky, eclectic and homely. Portions are called generous, and the owner is praised for being hospitable. Dogs are welcomed, with one reviewer's dog given treats and a blanket. The few complaints are small: one diner wanted fewer limits on wines by the glass, and another found a single slice of brioche too little for a large slice of chicken parfait. One reviewer suggests booking given how busy lunch was. A last-minute party was fitted in at an outdoor table warmed by the fire.

“There are establishments one visits merely to dine, and then there are those rare and charming places where one feels, for a few precious hours, that the world has slowed its hurried pace. The Moody Cow in Ross-on-Wye belongs very much to the latter. From the moment we entered, there was an unmistakable warmth and character to the place. The atmosphere was wonderfully inviting — intimate, convivial and possessed of that rare quality which makes one immediately feel both welcome and entirely at ease. It is a setting in which good conversation, fine food and a leisurely glass of something agreeable seem almost inevitable. The food itself was nothing short of exceptional. Each dish was beautifully conceived and presented, yet never at the expense of flavour. There was evident care and craftsmanship in every mouthful, with ingredients treated with the respect they deserve. It was, quite simply, a meal to remember. The service deserves particular praise. Attentive without being intrusive, courteous without the slightest hint of pretension, and conducted with a genuine warmth that is increasingly rare. One felt not merely served, but genuinely looked after. In an age when so many dining experiences can feel hurried and indistinguishable, The Moody Cow offers something altogether more enduring: character, hospitality, excellent food and an atmosphere that lingers pleasantly in the memory long after the final course has departed. Five stars without hesitation. A truly splendid establishment, and one I would recommend wholeheartedly to anyone fortunate enough to find themselves in Ross-on-Wye. A most excellent experience from beginning to end — bravo to the entire team.”

“At the end of a two week holiday visiting my family in Herefordshire, we went to check out The Moody Cow, under new ownership. On our first trip, my wife and I popped in for a quick drink and were made to feel very welcome so we switched our dinner plans for Friday to eat there with our 6 year old and my parents. Dinner was excellent, service was attentive but relaxed, and they made a delicious meal for my daughter. I can safely say we'll be back the next time we're in the area!”

“Wonderful lunch. One of the best roasts I have ever had. Burger and fish and chips were amazing too. The service was really great. The owner was very accommodating to ensure we all had a great lunch. Lovely and cool inside even with the 28 degree heat! Very dog friendly, he was even given treats and a blanket. We all had dessert too - sticky toffee pudding, brownie and eton mess. All amazing. Would 100% return and recommend.”

“One of the best food and service experiences ive ever had the pleasure to review. Table booking online was easy and quickly responded to. We needed a very special meal to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday and the Moody Cow was recommended and most definitely didn't disappoint. Greeting on arrival was homely and service beyond that point wad exceptional with the food quality to match. Special thank you to Chris and Ben for making the evening very special for the family and especially the birthday girl. Thanks”
