About The Dog & Muffler Inn
The Dog & Muffler Inn is a pub on Joyford Hill in Coleford, in the Forest of Dean, and it began life as a cider house. The former cider house had its own orchard, and the original cider press is still visible in the garden, a physical record of what the building once produced. Inside, several rooms branch off the main lobby. The menu runs to 57 dishes, including Chicken Liver Pate, Duck Bonbon and Pork Belly, and Sunday lunch is served to a busy house. At the bar, Butty Bach, a Wye Valley ale, sits alongside a wine list that includes a South African Pinotage. The pub is run by a couple, and a manager chats with guests.
Good to know
“A Warm and welcoming Inn in The magical Forest Of Dean. Originally a cider house with its own cider apple orchard and cider Press which can still be seen today in the garden. It has been extended over the years and the interior has been designed to make it feel at ease. Relax and enjoy the large open garden with shady parasol in the summer or settle down by the floor of fire in the winter.”

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come back to the Sunday roast, with one calling it consistently good and great value, and a lamb leg and its gravy named specifically. Close behind is the welcome for dogs: several describe a fresh bowl of water, a jar of treats and staff who made a fuss of a Labrador. Diners also single out the Wye Valley ale Butty Bach, a red South African Pinotage, salmon with pea purée, sausage and mash, curry and banoffee pie, with generous portions and friendly staff mentioned repeatedly. One reviewer says the kitchen handled nut and rapeseed intolerances well by using bean oil. The garden gets praise for its views of rolling hills. The caveats are specific. One reviewer found the mushroom starter seemingly frozen and the stuffed peppers and liver poor, though the mushroom soup was very nice. Another found the chairs uncomfortable, said the layout lacks the cosy pub feel, and left after the meal without buying more drinks. A third notes there is no phone reception. Several reviewers praise a manager who took time to explain the pub's history.

“First time there, food was terrible, my partner had the mushrooms for a starter if she wasn't so hungry she wouldn't have ate them she's a foodie wasn't fresh she thinks they were frozen..yuk.then she had stuffed peppers for main that was shit as well..i had mushroom soup for starters very nice and the liver for main which wasn't very good. Could have been the chef on the day who knows. Young girls serving very good, the place itself is lovely and very reasonable priced drinks, lovely garden area”

“Highly recommended ***** We stumbled upon this absolute gem and had a wonderful experience. The staff are friendly, service is quick, and they are brilliant with allergies (using bean oil was a massive relief for my nut and rapeseed intolerances!). Thanks to Matthew. The food was spot on—generous portions of delicious sausage & mash and curry, followed by a fantastic banoffee pie. Outstanding value for money. We’ll absolutely be returning if we come back to the area 😋 xx”

“What a wonderful find. The couple who run the place are really friendly and you can easily see the pride in what they do. Food excellent, good size portions and everything cooked to perfection. The salmon is great and the pea purée the best I’ve ever had. The best about this place is the selection of wines and not at all over-priced. Highly recommend the red South African Pinotage, a true taste of the best wine from the south west region. We will definitely be back and thank you”

“White bait, mean portion, main meal good size and filling, lemon meringue pie with ice cream, mean portion, uncomfortable chair and i was told there weren't any comfortable chairs to relax in after you've eaten so left after meal without buying more drinks, prices rather high. The current layout is far from the cosy pub atmosphere you would expect.”
