About Route 1066 Cafe

Route 1066 Cafe is a biker-friendly cafe on the A21 in Robertsbridge, on the route between Hastings and London. A Morrisons Local convenience store and a chicken shop share the building, so one stop covers groceries as well as a meal. The kitchen serves a full English breakfast and traditional cafe food, with fish and chips and fried chicken on the menu. Curries run alongside them, including a lamb bhuna. The menu also lists traditional British puddings. The diner-style setting has an indoor cafe area and a small restaurant area. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often describe the cafe as a biker stop, with breakfast the dish discussed most. One calls the breakfasts great, while another found the full English slow to arrive, with overcooked, dry sausages and hash browns that seemed re-fried. A third felt the sausages were pre-cooked and warmed and the plate overpriced. Close behind, fish and chips and chicken are called delicious and well portioned, and one diner praised a lamb buhna and chicken tikka masala. A latte and a bacon bap are called good quality, and traditional British puddings are singled out, though one found the hot chocolate lacking. Friendly staff come up repeatedly. The recurring complaint is the change in character: the cafe now shares its site with a chicken shop and a Morrisons Daily, and some feel the biker spirit has faded into a clinical atmosphere with club anthems playing. One diner found the chicken burger hard and overcooked and the spicy wings tasting of cooking oil.

“Still worth a visit if you are on the way to Hastings. Great food and service.”

“Food was terrible! Chicken burger hard and overcooked, spicy wings had no spice and tasted more like cooking oil, grease was dripping out the food and the chips were poor! There are too many things happening here as in, a chicken place, fish & chips place & a cafe!! Should just stick to it being a well run cafe!! Alot of money for such bad food!!”
  • Iain Thomson
“Glad the place is still there, but it’s now a chicken shop with convenience store attached. Some of the biker elements have been preserved but the atmosphere is clinical in comparison & the music is trashy club/braindead anthems that 22 year olds listen to before a night out. Come on guys, stick on a bit of hard rock! Service is great though & staff very friendly.”

“Not been here for couple of years didn't know they had been taken over as such and blended with Morrisons daily and fried chicken place I could see one of the workers eating making himself food and eating over the same surfaces he prepared food on the breakfast was overpriced for what u got on your plate and could tell sausages was pre cooked and warmed the lady serving was very pleasant and probably the only good thing I have to say about the place I won't be returning it's a shame cause this cafe used to be really good”
  • Russell Ryan
“Nice place. Only had a coffee and bacon bap but was good quality and fast service. Great for bikers.”
