Quick info
About Ugly Bird Japanese Restaurant
Ugly Bird Japanese Restaurant sits in Catherine House in Portsmouth, an authentic Japanese restaurant where the kitchen runs sushi and ramen alongside yakitori-style skewers cooked over a charcoal grill. The room carries pine booths and Japanese lanterns in a layout that recalls a neighbourhood izakaya, and a private dining room at the back hosts larger groups. Bowls of tonkatsu ramen simmer for 14 hours, while the menu also covers bento boxes such as the Teriyaki Chicken and Pork Ribs versions, plus king prawn Thai-style skewers and chicken gizzard skewers. Drinks span sake, Japanese whiskies and beers alongside non-alcoholic options, and desserts include a matcha crepe cake and a yuzu snow cake. Booking is required to secure a table, as the room fills quickly even at early dinner. Dogs are welcome inside.

Customer Review Summary
Across the reviews, the most consistent draw is the authenticity of the food, with the charcoal grill, yakitori skewers, and ramen broth drawing particular praise from multiple diners. Several single out specific dishes by name, including the chicken gizzard skewers, unagi don, tonkatsu ramen, Godzilla roll, and the ugly bird platter, while matcha crepe cake and yuzu snow cake are repeatedly mentioned as standout desserts. The interior, decorated with pine booths and Japanese lanterns, is described by several as evocative of neighbourhood izakayas in Tokyo. Service is consistently noted as quick, attentive, and warm, and one reviewer points out the owner by way of explaining the restaurant's appeal. Close behind, a handful of diners flag trade-offs: one describes the Godzilla roll as heavy on sauce and mayo that drowned out the fish, another calls the chicken stir fry bland and the bento portions small relative to price, and a third notes the tonkatsu ramen lacked a proper ajitsuke tamago egg. Several reviewers advise booking ahead, given how busy the restaurant gets even with early evening reservations.

“Gorgeous restaurant. VERY helpful staff, great menu, really busy- even though table booked for 17.00hrs- so booking is probably advised. Prices good, choice, excellent, portion size- just right. A really great restaurant.”

“Took my man here for hid birthday meal. I must say what stunning food and service. Highly recommended 👌”

“Ugly Bird does not live up to its name. It is not ugly but with pine booths & Japanese lanterns, it is reminiscent of the cute neighbourhood Izakaya Japanese taverns seen all over Japan. And to add to that authenticity, their Japanese chef brings a bit of yakitori (grilled skewers) magic, artisanal sushi and 14hr tonkatsu ramen broth to the table - all the comfort foods often found in different establishments in Japan but here under one roof. We tried the recommended king prawn Thai style skewers (something you won't find in Japan) which were succulent, spicy and delicious. Likewise, the umami-rich tonkatsu would have been perfect except for the lack of a proper 'ajitsuke tamago' ramen egg. We did not try the beers, sake or Japanese whiskies but imagine these would make Ugly Bird a perfect place for grilled & sushi snacks with drinks with friends at the end of a long day. Highly recommend.”

“Had my celebratory meal here! Super near portsmouth train station :) I love the chicken gizzard skewers that dauce wasnt needed. Good texture and seasoning. Prawn tempura - juicy prawn, crunchy batter, sauce could be improved Chicken gyoza - juicy flavorful filling, crunchy wrapper, good dipping sauce Unagi don - eel was tender, sauce on the sweet side, rice perfectly cooked, good portion size Mongolian beef don - beef was tender, sauce was interesting as I cant point out what seasoning was used (a bit on sweeter side too) Pork ribs bento - ribs were marinated well and was tender (again on the sweet side) Matcha crepe cake - matcha flavor was evident and it was not too overwhelming, the earthy taste of the matcha was good that it balanced out the creme Hokkaido chocolate snow cake - really good, perfect balance of flavors. The service was very quick. They have a loo. You can see the restaurant from the road. Accepts card payments.”
