About Wollaton Fish Bar

On Russell Dr in Nottingham, Wollaton Fish Bar is a fish and chips takeaway where cod and chips can be ordered with mushy peas or curry sauce on the side. Kebab and donner meat share the menu with burgers, pies, wraps and fritters, which gives the counter more to offer than fish alone. Sausages come battered or plain. The shop works mainly as a takeaway, with a small bench by the window for anyone who waits, and orders are walk-in.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is the main draw, with reviewers describing cod in a light, crispy batter and chips that are crispy, fluffy and light, sometimes with a thick curry sauce. Close behind are the doner meat, which one first-time visitor likened to proper lamb, and the little battered chicken bits a 15-year regular singles out. Mushy peas and battered sausages also turn up in orders. Friendly, quick staff, a clean shop and generous portions recur in the positive accounts. The criticism is substantial, though. Some longtime customers say things have changed. One describes fish that smelt old and flat in thin, soggy batter, with prices felt to have risen. Another says a large chips box was so light it barely filled them. Others report oily fish and stale, dripping chips, and one describes a hair in the food, slimy ketchup and slow service. Even a happy first-time visitor had the pop left out of the bag, though the kids' doner portion with chips was plenty.

“Disgusting fish and chips. Very oily cheap fish. Chips oily and stale not cooked properly. Dripping with oil. Avoid this chip shop. Also expensive. But absolutely disgusting. Avoid going to this chip shop.”

“Edit : Please note: pictures shown are from before change of ownership/management. Have eaten from here recently and it all seems to have changed. Prices have risen - again !.....and quality seems to have dropped. The fish we had was horrible - it smelt old & was flat, not big juicy flakes we're used to, and the batter was thin & soggy. My lady left hers - and so did next doors cat 😺 ! Prices are now eye watering - £1.80 for a small pot of mushy peas, you've got to be kidding (they have always been lurid green since we 1st came here 10 years ago, see pic), £9.50 for a small fish deal. Chips were absolutely gorgeous to be honest but nearly £25 for 2 fish n chips (+2 fritters..) is too much. Last time we came here we had a huge tub of kebab meat too - for the same money !! ( it was gorgeous & we ate everything too..! ) Never againthough, enough is enough. Time to find a new chippy methinks.”
