About Pearl Garden
Pearl Garden is a Chinese takeaway at 40 High St in Norwich. The menu lists sweet and sour chicken and spring rolls, two familiar Chinese takeaway items. The shop trades in the evenings only. It is open Monday to Sunday apart from Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when it is closed, so dinner orders fall on the other days of the week. That gives the takeaway five evening openings each week, Thursday through Monday.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often return for generous portions of fresh, non-greasy food, with chilli beef, chicken and ginger, and Kung Po chicken named as standouts. Close behind are the satay chicken skewers, special fried rice, and crispy beef. Several mention food that arrives hot and cooked to order, and one notes vegetarian options. Reviewers describe the service as friendly and on time, and one praises the good quality meat and vegetables. One reviewer disagrees sharply, reporting a poor chicken curry and a sweet and sour chicken coloured pink by the sauce that looked boiled rather than fried. That reviewer also describes dry spring rolls with a paste-like filling, like a frozen supermarket box, and claims the glowing reviews are local jokes. Another reviewer, by contrast, calls the spring rolls perfectly crisp. Others finish on the bbq spare ribs, described as delicious.

“Best Chinese in town. Very friendly service always. The food never disappoints. I recommend the Kung Po Chicken and satay chicken skewers, and the special fried rice. Great for a quick takeaway if you are needing a quick bite.”

“First of all I would like to point out that any reference in other reviews to this being a restaurant is not true. I found out from the young lady who served me that local youths have been puttting 5 star fake reviews on here as a joke (she thought it was funny too) and have been referring to it as a restaurant with fine dining experience, etc. Sadly, I found it to be the exact opposite. This is a Chinese takeaway and I have judged it as such. I ordered two meals which arrived quite quickly. One was a chicken curry and the other a sweat and sour chicken. The curry was poor and the sweat and sour was absolutely awful. I do not think I have ever bought such a bad meal. The chicken was pink from the dye in the sauce which meant that you could not tell if it was cooked or not. Quite frankly, it looked as though the chicken, onions and pineapple had been boiled in this sickly pink broth and not fried at any stage at all. It was very insipid looking. I also ordered spring rolls which turned out to be the type that you would get if you bought a frozen box of 24 from a very downmarket supermarket (I've made that mistake before. They were very skinny, narrow things with non descript english vegetables inside that formed a paste rather than a firm crunch, were very dry and there was no sign of a bean sprout at all. If I could give the food no stars, I would. I would definitely not go there again!”

“Great Chinese! Personally think it’s the best one in town, portions are great and there are vegetarian options too which is a huge plus! They’re really kind and the service is always on time and friendly 😊”

“If fine dining is an art, then this Chinese restaurant is the Louvre of Norwich — except instead of hushed galleries and security guards, you’re greeted by the soft glow of lanterns, the faint perfume of soy and sizzling aromatics, and the unmistakable presence of Owen, who mans the front desk with the kind of calm authority usually reserved for airport air-traffic controllers and Supreme Court judges. From the moment you step inside, you’re swept into an atmosphere that whispers, “Yes, you will overeat… and no, you won’t regret a single dumpling.” The décor strikes a perfect balance between traditional elegance and the comforting sense that you’re about to make life choices that revolve heavily around noodles. The lighting is soft, the ambience warm, and somewhere in the distance you can almost hear the gentle clatter of a wok living its best life. Now, the food. The crispy beef? Nothing short of a spiritual experience. It’s fried with such precision that NASA should honestly consider hiring whoever’s in that kitchen. The sweet-and-sour chicken arrives glistening like it’s been polished for a trophy cabinet, and yes — it tastes even better than it looks. Don’t even get me started on the spring rolls. They’re so perfectly crisp that biting into one feels like breaking into a secret vault of flavour. Service is a delight, thanks in no small part to Owen’s presence at the helm. He stands at the desk with that iconic “I run this ship” energy — the kind of man who knows every order, every table, and possibly every guest’s star sign. He might not say much, but you feel the Owen Effect: a mystical force that keeps the evening running like a perfectly steamed dumpling. In conclusion, this isn’t just a meal — it’s a culinary pilgrimage. A journey. A tale of spice, satisfaction, and subtle nods from a man named Owen who guards the entrance like the benevolent gatekeeper to flavour paradise.”
