Quick info
About Grand Café
A former bank building on 8 Drapery houses Grand Café, a café in Northampton town centre where high ceilings and a mezzanine balcony gallery give the room a second level of seating upstairs, with more tables downstairs. The menu stays short, covering sandwiches, pastries and cakes alongside tea and coffee, and pistachio runs through it in a pistachio croissant and a pistachio butter used in drinks. Espresso drinks include the cortado and the iced latte, and matcha sits beside the coffee for anyone skipping it, with oat milk offered as a milk swap. Orders are taken at the counter and no booking is needed, and the café opens daily. Drinks and food can be taken away for eating off site, and the position near the bus station suits a stop before travelling. Outdoor seating is available for those who want to sit outside, and there are toilets on site.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is what draws reviewers back most, described as consistently well made, with one visitor calling the cortado the best they can remember having in the UK and others singling out the iced latte and the matcha. Close behind is the pistachio butter, which one regular names as the specific reason they choose this place over other cafes in town, alongside a pistachio croissant, freshly made cakes and sandwiches, and pastries that one reviewer compares favourably to Turkish style borek. The building itself comes up repeatedly, with its high ceiling, balcony and mezzanine seating upstairs and down, and several note it was formerly a bank. Staff are described as friendly, polite and helpful even when busy. One reviewer flags a surcharge for swapping to oat milk, and another pushes back on complaints elsewhere about noise, attributing it to sound travelling in a large, bright, open room rather than a fault.

“I really like this cafe, it's in a good location and the drinks are always really nice. The pistachio butter they use is amazing and the main reason that I always get my coffee here rather than the many other cafes in town. The team are always kind and helpful even when they're busy and the sandwiches and sweet treats are nice too. I wouldn't necessarily sit in a cafe in town, I prefer to take away, but I would happily sit inside here as it's lovely and spacious. I would recommend this spot if you're in town and need a nice drink 😌”

“I grew up in Northampton but moved to London, so imagine my surpise when I saw that Nationwide has turned into a café, so I couldn't help but pop in. The iced latte is beautiful, the décor is pleasing to the eye and the balcony is an amazing feature. I will definitely make time to return if I'm in the area.”

“This cafe is absolutely top knotch! My mum and I have been here twice now, we were visiting Northampton and I wanted to come here for a coffee ☕☕ The staff are lovely, polite and approachable! The atmosphere is so cosy and we feel comfortable in here ☺️ I used to go to Starbucks when I visited Northampton in the past but instead I think I am going to return here 😁”

“Here to see my team Plymouth Argyle play today. My first visit to Nton since 2018, and before that I used to live in St James area in the early 2000's. The Grand Cafe wasn't here back then. Can't remember the original building - probably a bank? Really nice atmosphere and really friendly service. Have to say your Cortado (and therefore your coffee) was exceptional. I drink as much Cortado as I can, and this was seriously the best I can remember having in the UK. Thank you and hope you stay around in the town for a long time to come.”
