The Skiff Inn
Quick info
About The Skiff Inn
On Clasper Way in Newcastle Upon Tyne, The Skiff Inn is a pub and restaurant with a conservatory and a wood-panelled bar. Its nautical items include a rowing boat, and murals run across the ceiling. The menu is wide and varied, with panuozzo and a seafood boil among the dishes. Sunday dinner is served with beef, pork belly, chicken or a "3 meats" option, and extra gravy comes in a jug. The chicken Kiev arrives with its garlic butter on the side rather than inside the chicken, and chocolate fudge cake is on the dessert menu. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday dinner draws the most praise, with diners singling out thick, melt in your mouth beef, pork belly and chicken, plenty of veg and nice gravy. The sandos that several came for after seeing them on social media earn generous, flavour-packed portions from one reviewer, though another found the Ultimate Beef sandwich a blob of gravy jelly in stodgy ciabatta, and the sandos are not served on Sundays. Staff are described as friendly, and the owner brought a high chair and toys for an infant. The recurring complaints are slow food and the chicken Kiev, which two reviewers say came with garlic butter or sauce on the side rather than inside, one calling the pot split and unpleasant. Others mention a three meats plate holding just three slices, fish and chips with more batter than fish, and bland side salads. One reviewer waited long past arrival for their order and felt their complaint went unanswered. One suggests booking in advance, and another notes an extra jug of gravy arrived automatically.

“We called into the skiff inn for lunch after seeing all the amazing looking dishes on Instagram. My wife ordered the Ceasar wrap which she said was sloppy with no lettuce or salad inside. I Ordered The Ultimate Beef sandwich and I can honestly say it was awful, it was a blob of gravy jelly in a thick stodgy ciabatta, Clearly not fresh. We’re not ones to complain so we ate the chips and just left. If they can plate that up and send it out to people then what’s the point complaining.”

“We stopped here for a late lunch on the way home from a wedding. We weren't really sure what to expect and we were delighted. Friendly service and possibly the best Sunday pub lunch we have ever had. Well cooked, lots of veg, nice gravy (with an extra jug provided automatically) - great find and really recommended.”

“Lesson learned! Took a recommendation from an influencer review and didn't find the same experience. If you engage the services of an influencer, the same level of service should be provided. I reserved a table for 3 at 4pm and we arrived spot on time. Our table was ready and a waitress came over for drinks orders and with menus quite quickly. That's where the good news ends. Served drinks and we waited and waited for someone to ask for our food order until we decided that we must have to order at the bar. Told at the bar that someone would come over, which they did. Then we waited and waited and waited. A couple on a table over from us, who came in about the same time, were Served, finished, paid and out before our meals came out just before 5pm. I had lasagne without chips, thinking the salad would be a bit more substantial, it wasn't. My husband ordered chicken Kiev but he found it was a chicken breast in breadcrumbs. A pot of something very unappetising was put down and he had to ask what it was. Apparently, it was 'extra' garlic butter. See picture. It was completely split and when he dipped the chicken into it the taste was unpleasant to say the least. When the waitress came over for our plates, she asked if everything was alright. My husband said, no. She asked why and he explained about the chicken Kiev - no response. When I paid for the bill I was asked if everything was fine and I said that I'd had better - no response. We actually travelled quite a long way to visit this pub and the journey wasn't worth it. I'm fully in favour of tipping for a good experience but, although staff were pleasant, they weren't effective, so no tip was left. Secondly, the review posted by the influencer described an above average child friendly service, which also appealed to us, having a 4 year old with us. Apparently, drawing equipment and other toys were readily provided and children were given special treatment. This did not happen at all. Very disappointed in both the service, the food and the lack of customer service regarding our dissatisfaction.”

“I came across this place on social media and was completely sold straight away and it absolutely lived up to the hype! We went for the sandos and honestly, they did not disappoint. Packed full of flavour and really generous portions, they were spot on. The rest of the menu looked just as tempting too. I couldn’t help but notice what other tables had ordered and everything coming out of the kitchen looked incredible. The pub itself has a lovely atmosphere, really welcoming and well put together. The staff were friendly, attentive and happy to help, which made the whole experience even better. Would definitely recommend and I’ll absolutely be back to try more!”
