About The Mogul Raj

The Mogul Raj is an Indian restaurant at 15 Merton Rd, on the precinct in Ponteland. From the outside it looks like a typical Indian takeaway, but a restaurant sits inside. A banquet deal puts a starter, a main, rice, naan and poppadoms together as one set meal. The menu also has a Chef Special page, and the tikka masala curry pairs with garlic naan. Reservations are required. Some dishes contain wheat, soya, dairy or nuts, so guests with food allergies should tell the team before ordering.

Customer Review Summary

Tikka masala is the dish reviewers name most, one praising it as not too sweet and another pairing it with garlic naan and spicy chips. Close behind are the chicken saag, chicken shashlik, king prawn pathia and vegetable dansak, described as fresh, flavourful and nicely seasoned. Diners also single out the chef specials, and one calls the naan really good. Staff are consistently described as friendly, polite and happy to answer questions about the food. The complaints centre on extras and sides. One takeaway customer found the naans hard, the poppadoms stale and the mango chutney sour, another found the Bombay aloo bland and oily, and a third called the starters very ordinary. A sirloin steak arrived thin and overcooked after medium rare was requested, and one diner thought the music slightly too loud. Several mention the Sunday banquet deal as good value. One takeaway customer was given the mango chutney on the house, and another left with complimentary chocolates.

“Banging food from the boys at the mogul raj, the Tikka masala and garlic naan combo was mint. NO ONE DOES IT BETTER. The spicy chips complimented the meal perfectly, couldn’t ask for any better. Gabagool? Ova here!!”

“Incredible food for incredible prices in this economy. I ordered a chicken saag and chicken shashlik and it came within 5-10 mins and was piping hot. Food tasted fresh and flavourful and the staff and atmosphere made the experience very enjoyable. Will defo be back again and reccomend everyone to give it a try if you haven't already!”

“I ordered for takeout for my family and the food and service was immaculate. I was welcomed the second I walked through the doors. I also further received complementary chocolates when leaving. 10/10 service and i would highly recommend stopping by if you are driving around Ponteland!”

“We ordered a takeaway and got the Sunday deal which is actually a really good deal - a starter, a main, rice, naan and poppadoms. When I was waiting for my food, I couldn’t help but notice how dirty the carpet and the chairs were in the bar/waiting room. The curry’s themselves were lovely (as well as the rice). However, we felt like a lot of the extra bits (naans, poppadoms, poppadom sauces) were maybe not as fresh as the curry’s. Our naans were hard and our poppadoms were stale - the mango chutney was also really sour which I found bizarre and the onion salad wasn’t what I expected after having it lots of times before from other Indian restaurants. Despite this, the staff and service are really good - the staff member who served me was kind enough to give me the mango chutney on the house when I asked if they had any little pots I could purchase.”
