About Happiness Inn
Happiness Inn is a Chinese restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne, with its dining room upstairs behind a small front at 91A Percy St. Two menus run side by side: an Anglicised list of the usual Chinese dishes and a separate traditional Hong Kong menu, so guests can choose between familiar takeaway-style plates and the Hong Kong range. Cantonese dishes sit alongside some from mainland China. Dim sum is part of the offer, with soup dumplings and beef rice rolls among the options. Egg tarts are served only on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The upstairs room is large and traditional in style, with a windowed kitchen. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return above all for the dim sum, with turnip cakes, beef rice rolls and soup dumplings singled out, and several call it authentic and generous in portion. Close behind are the traditional Hong Kong dishes, including black pepper diced beef, king prawns in Typhoon Shelter sauce and a sizzling spicy pot with lotus root and sticky rice cakes, which one diner found stunning. Many describe cheap prices for the quantity, and one visitor travels from Edinburgh for the food. Service divides opinion. Several find staff friendly and quick, while one reviewer describes sitting about fifteen minutes with waiting staff standing nearby, no one offering tea, and other later arrivals being served first. The same reviewer found some dishes bland and was disappointed that egg tarts are only served on certain days. A few call the room shabby or run down, though others find it traditional and spacious. One diner got a separate menu of traditional Hong Kong dishes alongside the Anglicised one.

“A very nice restaurant that I didn’t know for a long time until this time my friend recommends to us for a feast - it’s a little hidden as its front was quite small in Newcastle’s busy high street but the inside was huge and spacious. It also had a windowed kitchen so we could see how dishes were cooked (but not every dish). The dishes were served in a very good speed and we ordered a huge amount (very starving at the time 😄), very delicious, more towards Cantonese style. And the staff were nice as well. 7 of us went there together on a Saturday night. Parking was available just outside the restaurant - needed to pay.💰”

“Their dim sum is absolutely authentic, and I wish more customers who usually come here for curry would give it a chance too. The dim sum is delicious, flavourful and generous in portion size. Tea is only £1 per person and is refillable, which is wonderful value. The service is fantastic: warm, friendly and genuinely lovely. We travel all the way from Edinburgh just to enjoy their food, which says a lot about how good it is. There are always many Cantonese-speaking customers here, and they clearly know this is one of the loveliest places for steamed dumplings, soup dumplings––dim sum. For around £40 for two people, we had tea for two and five types of dim sum, with around 20 pieces in total. For the quality, authenticity and warmth of the service, it is excellent value.”

“A longstanding restaurant apparently been open since 1962. With such a life span they must be doing something right. Staff are friendly and efficient. They offer a variety of more 'traditional' non takeaway style Chinese foods. We had a variety of meat, seafood and veg/rice. All were well cooked, I couldn't fault any of the dishes. Will certainly return”
