Quick info
About Mother Hubbards Nelson
On Manchester Rd in Nelson, Mother Hubbards Nelson is a restaurant serving fish and chips, with a dining area whose big windows overlook Pendle Hill, so diners eat with the hill in view. The menu is large, and it starts with Jumbo fish and chips, which comes with a Super Jumbo portion for bigger appetites. The Munch box pairs chicken strips, hot wings and fiery fish pieces with chips, a drink, a side and a butty. Kids fish bites and chips gives younger diners their own plate. Fish and chips are cooked fresh to order, so a short wait is normal. Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy are available as sides. The restaurant is open daily and is part of the Mother Hubbard chain.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the jumbo fish and chips, with the super jumbo and special fish singled out as massive, freshly cooked and piping hot, and the batter described as crispy. Close behind are the fat chips, mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy, plus the fish bites and a munch box with chicken strips and hot wings that one reviewer says could fill two people. Several praise friendly staff, generous portions, and a modern, bright dining area that is spotlessly clean, with big windows looking out to Pendle Hill. The complaints are about value and consistency. One reviewer says a special fish and chips came with only a handful of chips, which were cold, and compares it unfavourably with the Burnley branch. Another was charged for a sausage for the dog that they found far dearer than at a nearby chippy, and a third found raw chips and an overfried, short-changed box of fish bites, though still calling it a favourite place. One reviewer who could not finish a super jumbo plans to go for a regular fish and chips next time.

“£15 for a special fish and chips and you get a handful of chips eh? Lost custom, Burnley branch is much better 3x amount of chips and fish is bigger. You lot need to sort your act out Edit: so having ordered regularly from Burnley i presumed £15 roughly was special and chips, having looked through again i saw that your version just now i saw the with chips option which i missed earlier. When one place is selling it with chips for £1.50 less it can be confusing. Regarldess however the chips where cold, its based 5 mins away.”

“Not from this area. But up here camping, fancied fish and chips after climbing Pendle Hill. Google Maps me here. The food here is great, generous portion sizes, great service. If you're in the area, drop in, you won't be disappointed.”

“Order to take out for 3 people and sausage for the dog !! It was ok but I won’t be going again after being charged £4.89 for a sausage, get jumbo sausage and chips kids meal at barden chippy cheaper it’s only £2.08 for jumbo sausage ….ridiculous £4.80 , it was £49 quid in total. When she told me 2 hours later how much a sausage was I vowed never to go there again . REPLY TO RESPONSE : you can refund the difference then cause you charged us £4:89 and no chips were offered or given .”

“Fantastic fish and chips at this place I was driving past. Accidentally ordered special fish which was massive! Chips were nice and fat and I had a spicy curry sauce. Generous portions, friendly staff and spotlessly clean inside. Massive menu choice also. Was cooked fresh so I had a short wait.”
