About The Italian Sul Lago Milton Keynes

The Italian Sul Lago Milton Keynes is an independent Italian restaurant on Watling St in Milton Keynes, overlooking Furzton Lake. The kitchen makes Neapolitan style pizza, including a Diavola with 'nduja, and the menu also lists king prawn linguine and a vanilla cheesecake for dessert. At the bar, a mixologist puts a twist on classic cocktails and throws them through the air as part of the service. Dining is split between an upstairs and a downstairs room, and a recent renovation removed the open pizza kitchen and added more tables. The restaurant takes walk-ins. A three-course Valentine's Day menu is offered.

Good to know

“We are an independent Italian restaurant in Milton Keynes, with outstanding views overlooking Furzton Lake. Specialising in Italian food, Neapolitan style pizza and stunning desserts.Hospitality calls it theatre, but we call it edge. An edge through our staff’s personality, their ideas and their service will ensure you want to come back time and time again because of how you are looked after. We don’t just want to make coffee, it needs to be the best beans, perfectly frothed milk and executed latte art. It’s not just an ordinary cocktail, its flair from our mixologist and a twist on a classic whilst being thrown through the air.”

Customer Review Summary

Pizza is the draw reviewers raise most, with one calling a prosciutto and burrata pizza the closest to authentic Italian they have had in the UK and another calling the pizzas outstanding. Close behind are the lake views, the lighting as it gets dark, and dishes such as the ribeye on the bone, Pollo Milanese and vanilla cheesecake. Not every pizza lands: one diner who asked for no chilli on a Diavola found the 'nduja far too hot, and another sent back a pizza with uncooked dough. Service splits sharply. Some describe a friendly, attentive team, while others report requested chips, cocktails and water never arriving, a long wait with no one taking an order after moving tables, and a waiter rolling her eyes at a dessert with a piece missing. One reviewer reports a waitress serving food without washing her hands. Starters draw complaints too, including cold plates, breadcrumb-coated calamari and a sparse Tricolore salad. A waitress told one table that a new chef had arrived and that others had sent food back.

“Our first visit to this restaurant & never again! It was absolutely awful. We were there 45mins before our drinks arrived. The starters were terrible. I had Tricolore Salad, £7 for 3 slices of tomato, 2 small slices of mozzarella & 1 basil leaf. (see photo). My friend had the Calamari. It wasn’t batttered but in a thick coat of breadcrumbs & tasteless - the stuff you buy in frozen bags from the supermarket. (See photo). For main course I had the king prawn linguine, which tasted ok but very small potion (see photo) My friend had a pizza which he sent back as the dough was not cooked (see photo) We obviously made it known to our waitress that we weren’t happy, she said that they had a new chef & we weren’t the only people who sent food back. Don’t know what’s going on with this place, as I had read some good reviews. But definitely somewhere to avoid if you enjoy good Italian food 👎”

“The venue is beautiful and ideal for private events such as weddings or banquets. The food quality is decent, but the portions are quite small, especially pasta. If you’re celebrating a birthday, note that the “Happy Birthday” message is written in chocolate sauce, which doesn’t look very appealing, and the staff were unwilling to write it on the dessert plate instead. The service was acceptable but not particularly attentive, so it’s something to keep in mind. Considering the price and venue, I expected much better service and attention to detail.”

“This Italian is awesome! The vanue is fantastic, the food superb, the location beside the lake is beautiful - especially in glorious sunny weather. And lastly, the team. The team makes the occasion and these guys are great! Recommended.”

“Chose from internet map. Liked the menu and lake views. This turned out to be not a good place for dinner but a Fabulous one! The welcome was lovely, the view fantastic and the food and service spectacular. If we are ever in the area again we will return. The decor was superb, as was the vanilla cheesecake.”

“We visited Sul Lago this evening to celebrate International Women’s Day with a group of mums. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t meet our expectations. The atmosphere upstairs was very quiet, so we politely asked if some music could be turned on, but nothing really changed until we finished our meals, then they have stopped playing it. At one point we also noticed waiters whispering behind our table, which made us feel uncomfortable. Throughout the evening several things we asked for, such as chips, cocktails and bottles of water, never arrived despite reminding staff. One of the desserts that was brought to the table appeared to already have a small piece missing. When I politely pointed this out and asked if it could be replaced, the waiter rolled her eyes and asked if I was serious, which felt quite unprofessional, and.. left!! After mentioning I will write a review about this matter. Later we asked if we could move downstairs where the atmosphere was livelier, but after being moved we were left waiting for over 15 minutes without anyone coming to take our order. I then got up to leave, and one lady saw my intention and finally came to ask us about drinks, mentioned the excuse about having issues with another table. Considering our bill was close to £500, we expected a much higher level of service and attention. It was disappointing as we were really looking forward to celebrating together. Kind Regards L”
