Customer Review Summary
Set inside a converted chapel with domed ceilings and wall art that reviewers repeatedly call stunning, Calcutta Brasserie draws most praise for its curries, with diners singling out tender chicken dishes, a stuffed dosa, and a banquet-style scallops, king prawn, chicken and lamb spread. Several mention attentive staff and one describes a free surprise birthday cake, while others note quick service for takeaway thalis. But a recurring complaint centers on pacing and hosting: multiple reviewers describe staff clearing plates while people are still eating, one recounts a Christmas booking cut short when the kitchen closed before dessert could be ordered, and another found the naan on a banquet menu bland and the food merely average compared to a previous visit. One diner also notes the restaurant felt cold and smelled musky on a quiet night, and one references a past food hygiene issue that had since been resolved. Several say they would return, though a few say they'd think twice or would only come back on a quieter night.

“Was taken to Calcutta by friends who recommended it knowing I'm extremely fussy with food First impression when we walked in was wow what a stunning restaurant in an amazing building Service was excellent there was no rush to order which is a plus for me The food was amazing my chicken melted in the mouth it was that tender the side dishes were sensational my only criticism is the naan bread was cut into quarters I prefer it left in one piece but a lot of restaurants do that now I wish they wouldn't but it did taste amazing Would I go back absolutely yes I would and I will”

“Visited for the first time to celebrate a family birthday. Restaurant had a musky smell and was very cold. Our party of 5 were seated at a small table, even though there were plenty of other tables, due to it being so quiet, so we had to move things around and squish things on the table when the food arrived. Food was tasty and quickly served. Staff seemed to hang around, eager to clear plates as soon as they were clear, whilst some were still eating. Not sure we would return.”

“Our favourite place for takeaway Indian. Went for sit down meal, had a thalli which you can’t get on takeaway. Nice staff, quick service.”

“Restaurant is impressive, parking around the back. Inside is huge and we arrived on a Friday night and it was very noisy inside. Nearly all the tables we occupied and we were seated upstairs in the corner. Table was great and nice and big for the 3 of us. Service was excellent, food was excellent but a little pricey. I would come back during the week when it's a little quieter. I would recommend.”

“We visited Calcutta for our Christmas lunch and were genuinely excited — the food turned out to be absolutely divine, truly five-star quality. Unfortunately, the hosting and service let the entire experience down. We had booked our Christmas do for 1pm, but the moment we arrived the waiter told us, rather abruptly, that the kitchen would close at 2pm and we needed to order immediately. This created unnecessary pressure from the start. We enjoyed a lovely lunch, but when we tried to order dessert around 2pm, we were told the kitchen was closed and that we needed to pay our bill and leave. For a Christmas meal to last less than an hour must surely be some kind of record — and not in a good way. We were genuinely gutted. What made it worse was that Calcutta already knew this was a Christmas booking, yet never mentioned the early closing time. It’s hard to understand how a restaurant offering Christmas lunches is only open for two hours, or why guests aren’t informed beforehand. To sum up: five-star food, zero-star service. The food was exceptional, but the hosting felt rude, abrupt, and frankly quite awkward. Such a shame for a restaurant with such great potential.”
