About The New Crown

The New Crown is a restaurant, bar and live music venue in Merthyr Tydfil, found at 28 High St and run by a Portuguese family. The menu is Portuguese-influenced and includes steak dishes, with a T-bone among them. A separate veggie and vegan menu lists a halloumi salad. The bar serves the Crown Cream cocktail and runs cocktail deals. Live music events take place in the venue, so the building serves as a place to eat, drink and hear music under one roof.

Customer Review Summary

Steak draws the most praise at The New Crown, from a huge, well cooked T bone to a steak with garlic butter. Close behind are thick, tender gammon with fresh grilled pineapple, the Crown chicken salad, a grilled halloumi salad with mango and apple, and hot chicken wings with a chilli kick. Reviewers also mention the Crown Cream cocktail, friendly and welcoming staff, a lovely atmosphere, a Portuguese touch to the menu and regular live music. One reviewer notes the kitchen closes early in the evening and advises reserving. The kitchen draws real criticism too. A longtime vegetarian waited a long while, was told the tofu had run out, and received two lumps of halloumi and a sausage on a skewer, calling it the worst veggie meal they had eaten. Another found the meat dry and the seafood short on seasoning, with the fries the highlight, and a third thought the food just ok for the cost. One diner singled out the children's ice cream, served in a character pot, as the highlight of the visit.

“Very tasty food, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, good location, varied menu. I recommend for vegans and vegetarians, a varied menu for vegans and vegetarians too. I am a vegetarian, one of my favorite dishes is grilled halloumi salad, with mango, apple, lettuce, onion, olives... There is a variety of drinks, cocktails, desserts, Portuguese food, drinks...,there is a garden...”

“A nice pub/eaterie in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil. The staff are very welcoming and attentive. A good selection of beers, wines and spirits. Although we didn't eat on this visit the menu is varied and they food is well prepared. I would certainly recommend this pub to visitors to Merthyr Tydfil.”

“Really lovely atmosphere and the restaurant had a very nice vibe. The food looked absolutely beautiful when it arrived and everything was presented really well. Unfortunately, the taste didn’t quite match the presentation for us. The meat was a little too dry, and the seafood felt slightly lacking in flavour and seasoning. The fries were honestly the highlight of the meal. Considering the bill was over £80, we were hoping for a bit more overall.”

“Was in Merthyr for a few days with work and the Crown had been recommended as one of the better places to eat, so I thought I would give it a try as it had a good Veggie/Vegan menu. A great looking little pub in the centre of town and fairly busy on a Wednesday evening, however that is where the good stull ended. Got seated and was then left with a menu for ages (which I had put down like I was ready to order), eventually someone took my order (a Veggie skewer) only to return 10 minutes later to say they had no tofu (part of the Vegan skewer) and was hallumi ok. Told them I had order the Veggie skewer and it was fine, off they disappeared. About 30 minutes later a dinner appeared two lumps of hallumi and sausage on a hanging skewer (one sausage on the plate with some chips). Had I not been starving at this point, I would have sent it back and asked how this justified a £19 cost. I have been a veggie for 35 years and this is the worst veggie meal I have had. If you go to the effort of having a veggie/vegan menu, go to the effort with the food or don't bother with the menu. I have never left a bad review on anything before, but this meal was an insult”
