Quick info
About Happy Star
Happy Star is a fish and chips takeaway in Manchester, at 103 Manchester Rd, with a Chinese menu and an English chippy menu under one roof. The chippy side covers fish and chips and jumbo sausage and chips, while the Chinese side is not limited to Cantonese dishes. Curry chicken and chilli beef are the chef specials. The menu is large, and chips come in big portions, with one large chips enough to feed four. The team will adjust menu items on request. The shop opens evenings only, Tuesday to Sunday, and closes on Mondays. Nights are busy with queues, and ordering by phone saves waiting. Payment is cash only.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the Chinese food, calling it the best Chinese takeaway in the area, with one recommending the chilli beef chef special and another noting the menu goes beyond Cantonese. Close behind is the English chippy side, where diners describe superb fish and chips, a jumbo sausage and chips with chips called the best in years, and a lovely curry chicken. Several mention fair prices and generous helpings. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and polite, and one long-time customer says they will adjust items on the menu if asked. The drawbacks are practical. One reviewer notes it is cash only with no delivery, and that it gets busy enough that they phone their order through to save time. Another reports the shop closed at 10.40pm when it advertises an 11pm close, after paying for a taxi to wait while they collected food. Still, one reviewer sums up the chips this way: a single large chips will feed four people.

“Absolute gem of a place! I visited Happy Star last night and was blown away. The curry chicken was lovely, and the jumbo sausage and chips were spot on - honestly, those were the best chips I’ve had in years. What really sets them apart, though, is the service. The staff were incredibly polite and genuinely friendly, which makes such a difference. I’ll definitely be returning soon!”

“I used to go to a chippy at this location many years ago and so it was more out of nostalgia than high expectations that I visited again. That and the fact that most chip shops in Droylsden seem to be closed, either permanently or because it was Tuesday night. To my delight the fish and chips were superb and the service (with a smile) was welcome too. I'll be back when I'm next around the area.”
