Butty
Quick info
About Butty
Butty is a Jamaican restaurant on Powell St in Manchester, run from the back garden of a house and reached down a ginnel behind the road. Customers who find it can sit in a little shed. The menu centres on curry goat served with rice and peas, alongside jerk chicken and oxtail. Lamb chops, brown stew chicken and curry chicken are also on offer. For something to drink, there are carrot and ginger, beetroot and pumpkin drinks. Because the entrance is tucked away behind an unassuming street, it helps to know the ginnel before setting out.

Customer Review Summary
Curry goat draws the most praise at this back-garden Jamaican spot, with reviewers pairing it with rice and peas and describing meat falling off the bone and spicing unlike anything they had tried before. Jerk chicken comes close behind, with one reviewer calling it better than what they ate in Jamaica. Lamb chops, brown stew chicken and a carrot and ginger drink called fresh and delicious also get mentions. Many single out value for money and friendly staff. The caveats are specific. One diner found the curry goat mostly bone and describes a rude young man in the kitchen and no guidance on how to pay. Another tried the jerk chicken three times and found it dry and not very flavourful, preferring the chicken curry. A third felt no dish stood out, and one says customer service is still a work in progress. One reviewer suggests arriving early because the queue can run long. A small garden shed gives diners somewhere to sit even in cold weather.

“Food was piping hot and tasted great. Staff were friendly. Ive never tried Goat so tried the curry goat with jerk chicken and rice and peas combo, it tasted a lot like lamb and the jerl chickenwas excellent, not dry eithet and the spices from both dishes were nothing like id tried before, really tasty. It was very well priced and my portion was huge for a medium. I also got the carrot and ginger drink and it was fresh and delicious. Would highly recommend this place.”

“Went here today 10.8.26 at about 11.30 . Got jerk chicken rice and peas and veg. All was very nice . Had the carrot and ginger drink which was also nice . Staff came across as friendly . Chicken was better than I had in Jamaica. From a back yard in Manchester 😅. Will go again”

“Butty is the best carribean food shop in Manchester. Quality and price. Authentic home cooking. Customer service is still a work in progress but other than that everything is perfect. There is also a comfy seating area”

“It was quite hard to find as it’s run from the back garden of the house, but me and my boyfriend were still excited to try it. When we walked in, it felt really quiet and awkward, like we were interrupting something. We both said hello, but no one really acknowledged us. The younger guy working in the kitchen was also quite rude while I was ordering. When my boyfriend collected the food, he had to ask how to pay because no one had told us. The same guy was rude again, which just made the whole experience uncomfortable for us as well as the people around us. I ordered the curry goat, but it was mostly bone. The meat that was on it was nice though, and the rice was good. It’s a shame because we drove a fair way to come here. The prices were alright, but the customer service really let it down. We won’t be coming back.”
