About Nicky Oliver Hairdressing

On Oldham St in Manchester, Nicky Oliver Hairdressing is a hairdresser that opened in 1990 as the founder member of the Northern Quarter. A dedicated wig room serves women, men and children with hair loss, and it welcomes both private and NHS clients. The salon also works with the Little Princess Trust. Day to day, the team handles wash, trim and blow-dry appointments, with a head massage during the wash and a scalp treatment on offer. Toner and hair treatments follow a consultation, and curly hair is styled as well. Wig styling and sourcing are part of the service. A private area is set aside for hijab-wearing clients. The business runs its own hair and make-up academy, where people retrain for careers in beauty and working hairdressers refresh their skills. Last-minute wash and style bookings are available.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often describe leaving confident in their hair after a stylist listens during a consultation. One had a scalp treatment and haircut tailored to thinning hair, another a custom ashy and brunette toner plus a shine treatment, and another a curly-hair style with a head massage during the wash. Close behind, a hijab-wearing client praises a private area for a wash, trim, curtain bangs and bouncy blowdry, and another was advised on a cut to suit her face shape. One chemotherapy client describes being helped to find a wig she calls beautiful and top quality. Regulars call the team friendly and welcoming. The main complaint is one detailed account of a senior stylist applying far too much product, leaving the hair greasy. When the client said so, the stylist walked out mid-appointment, the manager repeatedly asked what the client wanted done, and the client left having already lost the deposit.

“I was feeling in need of some TLC and booked a last minute wash and style, Carmen was amazing, it was just what I needed and I even got a lovely head massage whilst getting my hair washed. I left feeling fresh and she styled my curly hair to perfection. Will definitely do that again!”

“Absolutely loved my hair - after the summer it was feeling super dry, dull and hard maintenance. Following a consultation Carmen helped create the perfect toner mix of ashy and brunette and recommending a perfect treatment to bring shine back into my hair. Leaving me feeling confident with my hair again”

“The experience I had at Nicky Oliver was genuinely shocking. I booked with a senior stylist, Laurel, because I’d had bad experiences with curly hair in the past and, on my birthday, I wanted someone I could trust. I was happy to pay £100 for that confidence. My hair was washed and far too much product was applied. I trusted Laurel’s judgement rather than questioning her, but by the end my hair looked extremely greasy, separating into oily strands as though it hadn’t been washed. When I politely mentioned it and asked what style might work best, Laurel immediately became hostile, saying, “Well what do you expect me to do about that then, re-wash it?” before throwing her hands up, saying, “I can’t do this,” and walking out mid-appointment. The manager, Fabienne, handled the situation just as poorly. Rather than addressing Laurel’s behaviour, she repeatedly asked me what I wanted her to do. Laurel then shouted across the salon that the greasy result was my fault for not speaking up sooner. As the paying client, I don’t think it’s my responsibility to guide a senior stylist through their own profession. At that point I no longer felt comfortable letting Laurel continue and didn’t have any other choice but to leave. I was then shouted at to “GET OUT THEN.” I’d already lost my £45 deposit, which was still far too much for the experience I received. To make matters worse, the top of my scalp was sore afterwards from the hairdryer being held in one place for too long. The greasy hair could easily have been fixed. The real issue was the completely unprofessional response: a senior stylist storming off, shouting at a client, and a manager who seemed unable or unwilling to manage the situation. After reading other reviews and discovering Laurel and the manager are sisters, the lack of accountability made much more sense. Based on the way you’ve responded to other reviewers, I fully expect you’ll try to dismiss this review as a lie, just as you have with others. It isn’t. This happened, and judging by the number of similar reviews, I’m clearly not the only person who’s been treated this way. I wouldn’t return if someone paid me. I also want to add that this experience was obviously from when Laurel was working in the salon. I’ve seen your replies to other reviews who have had bad experiences with Laurel and you claim they’re lying as she’s now been off sick for a while, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that theyre reviewing their experience from prior to this? 🤣 I’m not sure why you think complete strangers would waste their time making up stories about your salon, or finding the specific names of your stylists for fun to then write a lie about. 🤣 I’ve seen your replies to other negative reviews where you repeatedly try to insinuate they’re lying, again it’s flattering yourselves to think that someone would spend their time writing ‘lies’. There are also often images attached which speak for themselves anyway, so your claims of there being ‘inaccuracies’ in their review is just totally irrelevant. Even if they hadn’t written any words, the images alone say it all. Instead of embarrassing yourselves by calling customers liars, perhaps take some accountability for the consistent complaints being raised.”

“I had my hair styled by Scarlett two weeks ago, and I’m absolutely delighted with the result! She did an excellent job and really understood the style I wanted. Even after two weeks, I’m still very happy with how it looks. Scarlett was lovely, professional, and paid great attention to detail. I’m genuinely very happy and satisfied with her work. Highly recommended! ❤️✨”

“This has been my go-to hairdresser whilst in Manchester for around 5 years. The hair stylists are professional whilst creating a comfortable environment which makes you feel at home. My most recent haircut was with stylist Scarlett who took time to listen to my recent hair thinning and texture issues. She provided me with helpful advice as well as safety netting. She also tailored my scalp treatment and haircut to help alleviate my concerns which instantly improved my confidence when stepping out.”
