“I haven't been there. However, 56 years ago I lived in luton not far from the Old Moat House. I remember that my friend John Taylor and myself became friends with a boy who lived there. We used to catch Salamanders from the moat as pets. He would take us inside and we enjoyed the lovely ancient atmosphere. I seem to remember a suit of armour and other antiques hung on the wall. It was good to look at the current photos to see that although it has changed somewhat it still retains the beautiful atmosphere that I still remember to this day.”

“Just over sixty people had a carvery after a funeral. We had pre booked and paid a very small deposit per person. Everyone enjoyed their food, I heard comments in particular about the great mashed and roast potatoes and the staff managed the large group really well with no hold ups waiting for food at all. We were able to stay for up to three hours. It was a hot day and some of the group sat outside later for a while on the small grass area too. This arrangement worked really well for us.”

“Lovely meal, waitress Maria really pleasant and friendly she made the experience so much more nicer. But not sure about the geezer behind the bar a bit grumpy. The lady who allocated the seating efficient. Thank you roast potatoes lovely.”

“The Old Moat House has been an old favourite of ours for carvery meals. From the outside, the building does look quite run down and could do with some attention, but once you’re inside, the atmosphere improves and the food is consistently very good, with helpful and friendly staff. Cora, the general manager, has always been especially kind and caring, and it really is a proper family-style pub. When my son was diagnosed with bone cancer in May 2023 and began chemotherapy, Cora was incredibly compassionate and went over and above to help us. At one point, when Charlie was rushed into the L&D Hospital while neutropenic, a member of staff even brought a takeaway carvery to meet me there so he could still have something he was craving during a very difficult time. Charlie suffered badly with mucositis during treatment, but even then he never lost his appetite for a Moat House carvery, which says a lot about how much he enjoyed it. Even now, years on, when we visit, Cora still makes a point of asking how Charlie is doing, which we really appreciate. We’ve also used the pub for birthday gatherings and larger family get-togethers, and they’ve been accommodating, including offering alternative menu options such as home-cooked pizzas alongside the carvery. Overall, despite the exterior needing some improvement, it remains a place we return to for the food, the value, and the genuinely friendly service. I would recommend it as a relaxed, family-friendly pub that does a solid carvery and looks after its regulars.”

“Maria was great but she appeared to be on her own serving other people as well as us. Despite this we didn’t have to wait too long to be served our meals. Two of the meals we ordered were not available as there was no lettuce for the salad and no pineapple for the pizza. The beef was very tender however the carvery wasn’t very hot. The burger was a bit dry as if it had been cooked a while.”
