About Public
Public is an independent coffee shop in Loughborough, on Frederick St, with a bakery on site and plants alongside the coffee. The space is large, with a high ceiling and bare walls, and the building has a former-factory look from the outside. Baked goods sit on trolleys at the bakery counter, including strawberry and berry croissants. Matcha, including a version made with coconut milk, is on the drinks side, and the kitchen serves sourdough with avocado and poached eggs. Food is made to order, so dishes can take a while to arrive, and the queue at the counter can reach nearly to the door. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Croissants draw the most praise, with reviewers singling out the berry and strawberry versions as soft and full of flavour, and some taking them home. Close behind are the matcha, including one made with coconut milk, and savoury plates such as sourdough with avocado and poached eggs, a cauliflower and hummus dish with hot honey, and a chicken focaccia. Carrot cake, waffles and banana bread also get good words, and the staff are repeatedly called friendly. Long queues are a constant, and several reviewers note that food and coffee arrive slowly when the room is packed. The complaints are specific. The Public plate came with hard cauliflower and squash, a smoked beef brisket was too tough to cut with a knife, and an oat flat white tasted too milky with an unpleasant UHT aftertaste. One reviewer calls the food average and overpriced, and another finds the room very loud because of its bare walls. One group's four toasties arrived in stages, the first well after the drinks and the other three later still.

“Was excited to try this place out with my sisters. Went in and the vibes were ok... the bakery section was open and the trollies with the baked goods were exposed so there was huge flies flying around, it was hot so I get that there will be that issue with any food place but I feel like measures could have been put in place to prevent flies walking all over the food. Staff didnt seem bothered by it and were very nonchalant. The tables had open pots of sugar and spoons for customers to use so people were obviously double dipping into their drinks, stirring and then putting the spoon back into the sugar pot, the sugar was lumpy and damp looking.”

“Truly great value. Probably should be charging more but certainly very happy they aren't. My breakfast brunch bun was delicious! In fact it was so big I couldn't finish it. Trust me I wanted to! Very friendly staff. Fresh food. The place doesn't look much from the outside. A bit like an old factory, but once you walk in it's fab. I'll certainly be back and have already recommended it to friends. See you next time I'm visiting in. Loughborough xx”

“Got the Public plate, very disappointing. Cauliflower and squash was hard, not at all roasted. Barely any feta or dressing. Sourdough was toasted on one side and arrived with a hard slab of butter on top, the leftovers I put in the tiny jar that came for the milk. My partner had the smoked beef brisket from the summer menu. The beef was so tough, he couldn't get a knife through and chewing it was a chore. Real let down, won't be coming back here but have had good experiences at the Mountsorrel and Leicester branches instead. Very loud in there as with the other branches due to bare walls and little soft furnishings. Couldn't hear the server at the till or when they came to the table with food.”

“Waffles and banana bread were pretty good. Americano and flst white were good but oat flat white was too milky and had an unpleasant UHT aftertaste which was a shame. Otherwise friendly staff and nice place.”
