About Taste Soul Good (Soul Food) (Lewisham)
On Lewisham High St in London, Taste Soul Good is an independent, family-run soul food restaurant at number 389. The menu is halal, and breakfast is served, so the kitchen works across more than one part of the day. Curry goat and jerk dishes sit alongside oxtail, and mac and cheese appears as a side that pairs with the curry goat. Combo meals, such as a main with two sides, let diners put a plate together from several items. Apple crumble and custard is available for dessert. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays.

Customer Review Summary
Curry goat is the dish reviewers name most, and opinions on it split sharply. Praise describes meat that melts in the mouth, and one server even removed the bones, while another diner received it with no gravy and mostly fatty pieces. Jerk chicken divides the same way: one reviewer calls it the best they have eaten, and another found it undercooked and pink. Mac and cheese, beef stew, fried chicken, popcorn chicken and plantain appear in happy orders, though mac and cheese is also called wet and just pasta with some sort of sauce, and one oxtail was described as watery. Several mention nice staff and a chilled late-night atmosphere. The complaints center on inconsistency: a stale hot dog bun, lukewarm food, only two battered prawns in a dish, and soggy delivery packaging. One reviewer reports flies landing on their meal. Another had peppered prawns forgotten from a delivery, and the manager personally delivered a remade order with a free dessert.

“Absolutely disgusting experience. I was served stale bread, undercooked jerk chicken, and dry, unappetising rice. To make matters even worse, there were flies all over the food, which raised serious concerns about hygiene and cleanliness. This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. Serving food in these conditions is completely unacceptable, and based on my experience, I genuinely believe this restaurant should be closed down until it can meet basic standards of food safety and hygiene. I certainly won’t be returning, and I would strongly advise others to think twice before eating here. *** Reply to the manager below… Thank you for your response, but I feel it misrepresents what I actually experienced. When I referred to the “bread”, I was talking about the hot dog bun that was served with my meal. The bun was stale and had blue discolouration on it, which is why I took it straight back to the member of staff on the till at your Lewisham branch. I also asked to speak to the manager, but I was told by the member of staff that the manager was not in. The member of staff herself looked at the bun and said it was “disgusting”, so it’s disappointing to read a response suggesting I didn’t raise my concerns at the time. I did exactly that, but unfortunately I was still left dissatisfied with how the situation was handled. The rice I referred to was the fried rice included with the jerk chicken, mac and cheese and ( 1 main 2 side meal). In my experience, the jerk chicken was undercooked full of pink, the mac and cheese did not taste fresh and had very little flavour, and the rice was dry. Regarding the flies, I can only comment on what I personally observed during my visit. Whether the food is usually covered or not does not change what I witnessed at the time. And the flies kept on landing on my meal personally which was disgusting. The member of staff told me she cannot do anything, because again… You wasn’t there. I appreciate that your restaurant has a 4-star food hygiene rating, but a hygiene rating does not invalidate a customer’s experience on a particular visit. My review reflects what I was personally served and observed. I have no reason to misrepresent my experience, and I hope this feedback is taken seriously rather than dismissed. In all honesty I would have walked out and refused to pay for the 2 separate meals I purchased. However I paid before I it was served. I have attached my recent transaction of the meal to dismiss any accusations that suggest I wasn’t there at your store.”

“After checking the place is 3min from me, and after reading review of delicious Carribbean food, so I was on the mission to have tropical breakfast, after being on the road, plus ferry from Amsterdam for some time, and back in SE home for couple of hours. On the website, the badly needed JerkyFoodOasis was marked "open" meaning the place is open for business, and with the front door literally visibly to naked bloodshot eyes wide open, from 9am. Went there at 9.40am and I was told by tall black lady that she just opened, and there is no food, and I should come after 10am. Misleading. I've worked 15 all together in hospitality, including 12 years in various Nandos joints actress South and southeast London areas. We never had the door wide open, backed by places websites opening hours, whitout being ready for business. Won't be visiting there again. Had not look at the food because it wasn't ready to display, so no marks for it at all. And I'll leave the remaining two points unmarked as well. Grumpy middle age man complaining here, but it was planned, and we all could taste the food in our mouths, and on drooling lips. Might give another shot in the future, but I'm scared of being slammed dunk, double time deprived of tasting the Royal of Carribbean delight. So one star for now, I'll change the rating when I'll be successful the next time. I'll answer here to the places reply to my "apping" Missing a Y there mate. Who this day and age go places and look for sign on the door, whilst they are wide open. Nobody was mopping the floor and front door weren't open for fresh breeze throughout. On the website, in blue was "open" and the magic hour was 9am. That's all. Have a good one.”
